Position Purpose

This position exists to raise restricted and unrestricted gifts for Dartmouth College in support of the Board of Trustees priorities for the institution.

Minimum Experience
  • Four years of experience in a complex college or university development operation.
  • Supervisory experience desired

  • Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent.

Key Accountabilities

Key Accountabilities

SOLICITATIONS & STEWARDSHIP

  • Manages assigned prospect pool for rating, cultivation and gift plan design and solicitation.
  • Works both alone and with volunteers or senior officers of the College to cultivate and solicit prospects.
  • Develops approaches and activities that lead to solicitation and gift commitments, and that will offer appropriate stewardship to prospects that have made such commitments to the College.
  • Solicits gifts personally and in partnership with others.
  • Develops short and long-term plans for soliciting individual major donors. Devises an overall strategy for stewardship of donors.
  • Evaluates results of solicitation activities for each prospect over time and evaluates/re-evaluates potential for future solicitations.
  • Establishes and maintains ongoing relationships with donors.
  • Explores opportunities for interaction and engagement with specific major donors, including the opportunities to advance donors’ interest in the College and to demonstrate the College’s interest in the donor(s).
  • Travels to visit prospects as necessary, and often in tandem with senior officers of the College; coordinates appropriate campus visits from prospects.

PROGRAM PLANNING/MANAGEMENT

  • Establishes performance goals in assigned development areas; monitors progress against goals and implements strategies to ensure success in meeting goals.
  • Recruits, organizes, trains, motivates and provides staff support to key volunteers.
  • Creates and executes plans for donor contact.
  • Participates in marketing programs to convey the case for support of Dartmouth College through a combination of direct mail, advertising, printed and electronic materials.
  • Prepares illustrations and proposals needed to present a request for support.
  • Manages budgets associated with the department in a prudent and fiscally responsible manner.
  • Participates in long-range planning for the department.
  • Oversees the collection and management of donor information.
  • Incorporates the needs of diverse populations in program planning.
  • Manages portfolio of individuals and classes to include high demand reunion and non-reunion classes
  • Manages significant numbers of top College Fund volunteers who are skilled in the art of cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.

COMMUNICATIONS/COORDINATION

  • Articulates and implements strategies for communicating with donors; drafts and customizes institutional correspondence to specific donors.
  • Communicates and advocates the needs of the College.
  • Develops networks with colleagues to keep current with best practices and emerging trends in philanthropy.
  • Writes contact reports and compiles other pertinent information following donor visits.
  • Develops strong and effective relationships with colleagues in other College programs.

STAFF DEVELOPMENT

  • Hires, supervises, trains, and evaluates staff to meet changing department needs.

Demonstrates a commitment to diversity, inclusion, and cultural awareness through actions, interactions, and communications with others.
