Dartmouth College seeks candidates for the position of Senior Associate Athletic Director for Varsity Sports. This position serves as a member of the Athletic Director’s senior management team that provides strategic leadership to 35 varsity sport programs. This position will have direct oversight of approximately 10-12 varsity sport programs, including the supervision of head coaches and their staffs, and is responsible for developing and promoting the department’s mission, vision and values within those programs. The Senior Associate Athletic Director will also assume oversight responsibility for one or more functional areas of the department (e.g., compliance, athletics communications, event management, etc.). Additional responsibilities include working with the athletics fundraising and external relations staff on special projects and events to enhance external support for women’s athletics programs. The successful candidate may also assume responsibility as the Senior Woman Administrator (SWA) but eligibility for that role is not required. Qualifications: Master’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience. Six years leadership experience in intercollegiate athletics, preferably including supervision of multiple head coaches and/or collegiate coaching experience.

Position Purpose

Reporting to the Executive Associate Athletic Director, this position has direct oversight of multiple varsity sport programs, including the supervision of head coaches and their staffs, and is responsible for developing and promoting the department’s vision, mission and values within those programs. Additional responsibilities include oversight responsibility for one or more functional areas of the department.

Minimum Experience
  • Six years of progressive leadership experience in intercollegiate athletics required, including hiring and supervising staff, budget oversight, and student-athlete development.
  • Direct supervision of multiple head coaches and/or head coaching experience at the collegiate level strongly preferred.
  • The successful candidate will be able to present a comprehensive understanding of intercollegiate athletics administration.

Key Accountabilities

Key Accountabilities

Sport Supervision

  • Contributes to the leadership and direction of the overall varsity sports program as a member of the athletic director’s varsity sports senior management team.
  • Oversees all aspects of approximately 10-12 varsity programs, including supervision and evaluation of coaches, scheduling, budget development and oversight, regular evaluation of program resources and performance goals, strategic planning, and management of student-athlete grievances and issues.
  • Coordinates search process for head coaches and makes hiring recommendations to the athletic director; assists head coaches with searches for assistant coaches.
  • Works with members of the athletics fundraising and external relations staffs to engage outside support for programs.
  • Provides guidance and assistance to head coaches and Deputy Director of Athletics (admissions liaison) for matters related to the recruitment and admission of student-athletes.
  • Serves as event manager for select home contests as necessary.

Department Administration

  • Contributes to department-wide administration, policy development, and strategic planning efforts.
  • Serves as a visible and effective spokesperson for the department, both within and outside the department.
  • Develops and maintains effective relations with students, staff, alumni and supporters.
  • Represents the department as necessary at College, Ivy League and NCAA meetings and events.

Special Events and Projects for Women’s Athletics

  • Leads or contributes to efforts to enhance the visibility and support of women’s athletic programs and cultivate connections with alumni/ae, parents, and friends.
  • Promotes professional development opportunities for coaches of women’s sports.

Oversees one or more of the following functional areas of the department:

Compliance

  • Supervises the Associate Athletic Director for Compliance.
  • Oversees the implementation of a comprehensive program to ensure compliance with NCAA and Ivy League rules.

Event Management

  • Directs, supervises, and coordinates all facets of the athletics event management program.
  • Facilitates the development and implementation of policies and procedures that contribute to high quality varsity athletic events for both the participants and the spectators.
  • Oversees the assignment, hiring, and payment of personnel necessary for game management (i.e. game officials, announcers, clock operators, minor officials, ushers, student workers, etc.).

Peak Performance Initiative

  • Supervises and provides direction to the Associate Athletic Director for Peak Performance. The Dartmouth Peak Performance program, also known as DP2, serves as an umbrella for the integration of services and resources to help every student-athlete achieve the highest levels of physical, intellectual and personal growth during their Dartmouth career.

Varsity Athletics Communications

  • Supervises the Director of Varsity Athletics Communications and works closely with this individual to set priorities and develop strategies to maximize efficient coverage and publicity for all varsity sports, including media relations, publications, personnel assignments, website development, video production, new media, and other avenues.
