Monday - Friday. 8 am - 5 pm. This position is a 24-month term position. Position Purpose

To assist with research and operation of Professor Katherine Nautiyal’s laboratory which studies the neural basis of behavior in mouse models. Ideal start date will be in August, 2018.

Skills & Knowledge
  • Good organizational and time management skills.
  • Highly competent in several laboratory methods, procedures, and techniques as well as the equipment and instruments.
  • Ability to work independently and apply critical thinking and sound judgement.
  • Works well with others in a team setting.
  • Ability to manage laboratory inventory and records.
  • Willingness to work with animals and also be exposed to hazardous materials such as radioactive materials, infectious materials, and/or hazardous chemicals.
  • Knowledge of computers and software applications, especially those for
    data analysis and presentation.
  • Some experience and/or willingness to learn basic programming in MatLab.
Minimum Experience
  • One year of relevant laboratory/research experience.
Minimum Education
  • Bachelor’s degree with a major in one of the biological sciences, psychology, or computer science or the equivalent.

Key Accountabilities

Research/Experiments

  • Works well independently with the primary goal of setting up equipment and running experiments.
  • May maintain mouse colonies including mating, weaning, and genotyping, while keeping careful records.
  • Identifies, troubleshoots, and corrects or recommends solutions to problems associated with experimental design; methods, procedures, and techniques; or equipment and facilities.
  • Adheres to laboratory safety requirements including general and chemical/hazardous waste safety disposal methods.
  • Maintains detailed and accurate laboratory records.
  • Collects, analyzes, and interprets data from performed experiments.
  • Prepares graphs and presentations to display analyzed results.
  • Assists in surgical procedures on mice.

General Laboratory Management

  • Orders and maintains stock of laboratory supplies.
  • Monitors equipment and instrument performance; obtains necessary maintenance and repair.
  • Instructs others in laboratory methods, procedures, and techniques and provides technical guidance and direction as required.
