Position Purpose

Responsible for daily operations, including circulation services and student employment. Processes and manages music collections and assists with collection development activities. Assists library users at Paddock Music Library as part of the library’s information services team.

Skills & Knowledge

Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal skills; the ability to work collegially in small-group and team environments

Ability to train, schedule, and supervise student assistants

Ability to work independently and organize, manage and prioritize projects with accuracy and close attention to detail.

Commitment to diversity and to serving the needs of a diverse population

Working knowledge of at least one foreign language, preferably German, French, or Italian.

Willingness to work an irregular schedule, including some nights and weekends.

Minimum Experience

Relevant library experience preferred and/or customer service experience.

Familiar with library operations in order to work independently.

Minimum Education

Bachelor’s degree.

Background in music; major in music preferred.

Key Accountabilities

Circulation Services

In consultation with the Librarian, manages the circulation desk and its services; keeps current with online circulation system updates and procedural changes; creates and maintains patron records; creates, updates and verifies item records; processes overdue notices, bills and missing materials; responsible for accounting related to Music Library services.

In consultation with the Librarian, develops policies and procedures for access services activities; interprets and enforces library policies to patrons and fosters and maintains good public relations with users.

Student Supervision

Hires, trains, schedules and coordinates the work activities of student assistants assigned to the circulation desk and to stacks maintenance functions.

Evaluates work performance and handles student time sheets, addresses personnel issues, and maintains student manual.

Collections Management

Responsible for stacks management functions, including shelving, shifting, shelf-reading, and noting preservation needs of materials.

Performs daily processing of electronic and print journal collection including checking in of new journals, claiming and binding; Creates, updates and verifies item records for music, coordinating with technical service departments.

Assists the music librarian with collection development activities; manages print-to-digital serials transitions.

Information Services

Assists patrons in securing information using databases, reference materials and referrals to outside sources.

Assists patrons with the use of equipment and software.

Other
Participates in evening and weekend rotation schedules, including supervision of students.

Serves on committees related to access and collection services. Interprets and adapts library system policies and procedures to staff. Liaison to the Preservation Department.
