Position Purpose

Dartmouth College Hillel’s (DCH) vision is to inspire every Jewish student to make an enduring commitment to Jewish life, its people, Israel, and to tikun olam (repair of the world). Committed to inclusive, egalitarian, vibrant Jewish life at Dartmouth, the Rabbi/Executive Director will provide oversight for student religious and spiritual observances, programs and outreach, leadership training, and management and development of Hillel initiatives. This position serves under the auspices of the William Jewett Tucker Center and will work with the Tucker team in promoting understanding, diversity, and community through interfaith/multi-faith programs and engagement.to enrich the lives of students at Dartmouth College.

Skills & Knowledge
  • Knowledge, experience and comfort in leading wide range of liturgical approaches to Judaism relevant to meeting student needs in Hillel setting.
  • Proven commitment to empowerment of student leadership.
  • Knowledge of Judaism and community development as well as a demonstrated sensitivity to the general issues involving Jewish life on campus.
  • Proven experience and commitment to multifaith work.
  • Awareness of age-related issues of college-age students.
  • Excellent interpersonal, group leadership, written and verbal communications skills.

Minimum Experience
  • 5-7 years of professional work experience, with 2–3 years of management experience required. Experience working in Hillel or higher education/student affairs strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in engaging a diverse student population who are involved to varying degrees in a rich and stimulating academic and religious life.
  • Demonstrated experience with caring, open-minded community-building and constructive, understanding issue resolution.
  • Experience working in competitive liberal arts institution preferred.
Minimum Education
  • Rabbinic ordination and in good standing with certifying Rabbinic organization(s).
  • Masters of Hebrew Letters or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Basic Unit of CPE preferred

Rabbinic Responsibilities

  • In coordination with Hillel students, lead or facilitate services and celebration of Shabbat and Holy Day observances.
  • Serve as a resource on matters of Judaism and religious diversity for the broader campus community.
  • In cooperation with William Jewett Tucker staff, partner in interfaith dialogue, foster identity and cultural exchange among students.
  • Under direction of the Tucker Dean/Chaplain, provide leadership roles for various campus functions such as MLK Multi-Faith Celebration, Baccalaureate/Graduation and other Tucker Center programs.
  • Provide pastoral care for students at their request or refer them for counseling or other resources when appropriate.
  • Initiate and maintain a working network with members of the United Campus Ministers (UCM) and related student campus groups.
  • Build and maintain communications and a collegial relationship with the Rabbi and staff of the Upper Valley Jewish Community
  • May serve as a resource, on occasion, if called upon to provide back-up Rabbinic support to the Upper Valley Jewish Community

Student Program Development and Management

  • Envision and develop an inspiring Jewish life on campus, in partnership with staff, student leaders, faculty, Board of Visitors, alumni, and Hillel International.
  • Passionately communicate DCH’s Mission, Vision, and Values in support of the goals of student ownership of its community and student engagement as foundation to DCH’s work with students.
  • Cultivate relationships with alumni, parents, the Development office, and others as partners to build a sustainable financial base; all in concert with College policy and objectives.
  • Work collaboratively with student leadership in the development, implementation and execution of programs that appeal to the broad spectrum of Jewish students.
  • Connect the community at Dartmouth with local, regional, national, and international opportunities and resources. Develop important partnerships with Hillel International and other organizations that further the opportunities offered to Dartmouth students.
  • Develop and implement metrics with which to evaluate each program and its relationship in furthering the mission of DCH.
  • Attend and assist in Dartmouth Hillel programs and College programs beneficial to the organization and/or student community.
  • Research and analyze available information and data and plans strategies to engage the Jewish student population not presently involved in Hillel-sponsored activities.
  • Implement strategies that include personal meetings, programs, and joint sponsorship with other student affiliated groups.
  • Develop and facilitate regular student leadership training and development programs and initiatives.
  • Develop a Hillel Division that responds to the needs of Dartmouth Jewish graduate students.
  • Manage Dartmouth Hillel schedule-of-events working calendar with the College and the Upper Valley Jewish Community.
  • Maintain strong programmatic connections with William Jewett Tucker Center and work closely with the Dean/Chaplain

Finance & Administrative

  • Manage the development and administration of program budgets.
  • Ensure accuracy and maintenance of records and files of all Dartmouth programs (e.g. program development, publicity).
  • Develop and administer operational policies, procedures and systems.
  • Perform financial accounting and business functions including monitoring budget vs. actual expenses and income, tracking and reporting program income and expenses, reconciling accounts, approving and processing payroll, HR, travel, purchasing and similar forms.
  • Direct and manage Hillel’s annual development/fundraising and stewardship efforts.
  • Supervise support staff, student workers, and interns.

Demonstrates a commitment to diversity, inclusion, and cultural awareness through actions, interactions, and communications with others.
