Position Purpose

As a member of the Digital Library Technologies Group (DLTG), the DevOps Engineer focuses on the development of systems that enable online access and discovery of library resources, in direct support of interdisciplinary digital research at Dartmouth and beyond. Working collaboratively with other DLTG members, this position is responsible for defining, documenting and supporting application deployment best practices, and provides expertise and ongoing support and maintenance procedures that enhance and ensure high availability, consistency, and security of the Library’s infrastructure.

Skills & Knowledge

• Extensive knowledge of contemporary Linux server administration.
• Proficiency in Bash, Perl and one or more additional development languages (e.g. PHP, Java, Ruby/Rails, C++)
• Demonstrated knowledge of/skill with: server-side technologies (Apache Server, Tomcat Server, Jetty Server); management and deployment of SQL database systems; distributed version control (Git, SVN); single sign-on authentication services (CAS, LDAP, Shibboleth, and/or Active Directory); and virtualized hardware environments.
• Ability to manage a complex workload and shifting priorities with minimal supervision.
• Strong analytical, planning, organizational and project management skills.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
• Demonstrated aptitude for learning new technologies.
• Commitment to diversity and to serving the needs of a diverse population.

Preferred:
• Experience with integrated library systems and Drupal.
• Demonstrated experience with: cloud technologies (e.g. AWS); container technology (e.g. Docker); automated provisioning frameworks; Solr & Blacklight technologies; and testing, continuous integration, and continuous deployment frameworks.

Minimum Experience

• 5+ years of relevant professional experience.
• At least 3 years managing complex infrastructure projects.
• Experience in higher education environment is preferable.

Minimum Education

• Bachelor’s in Computer Science, library science, or related field; or the equivalent in education and experience.

Technical Support
• Architect, monitor, maintain and support the Library’s development, testing, and production environment.
• Perform updates to Virtual Machines (VMs)/operating systems, deployed applications, and supporting software libraries.
• Actively monitor servers and applications and respond to system-level incidents, and application-level events when possible.
• In cooperation with service-providing stakeholders, codify service level agreements and uptime expectations. Help provision and maintain testing infrastructure, including integration and load testing.
• Perform systems administration tasks as needed.
• Act as a primary liaison between DLTG and technical staff in central Information Technology & Consulting (ITC).
• Assist with analysis of problems to modify existing programs and write new programs.

Communication
• Communicate with other DLTG and Library staff members to coordinate system installation and integration, and delivers project status reports.
• Develop and maintain professional relationships with technical peers in ITC and the IT divisions of Dartmouth’s professional schools (Tuck School of Business, Thayer School of Engineering, and Geisel School of Medicine) for the regular exchange of knowledge that could improve or impact Library services.
• Document technical specifications and architecture, support procedures, and end-user information for all projects.

Miscellaneous
• Attend conferences and workshops and collaborates with other institutions to develop further knowledge of libraries, software, and systems applicable at Dartmouth.
