Position Purpose

In support of Dartmouth College’s Alumni Relations mission, the Director of Lifelong Connections and Professional Programs will provide the vision, leadership and strategic oversight to establish and strengthen connections among Dartmouth alumni by designing programs and products that meet the needs and interests in the career and life development spaces that offer value throughout the many stages of their life – from young career, mid-career to transitional career stages, and from young alumni years to raising families to retirement. Investigates existing practices, researches needs and opportunities among constituencies and then designs and provides a comprehensive cadre of programs and products to ensure alumni professional and life stage needs are identified, prioritized and met through a range of services and sharing of alumni expertise. Works closely with Lifelong Learning colleagues to create an integrated Dartmouth for Life experience for all alumni.

Minimum Experience
  • Ten plus years of relevant experience.
  • Alumnus/a of Dartmouth College strongly preferred.
  • Experience in building a business enterprise or set of programs serving a defined customer base.
  • History of career networking or counseling others.
  • Marketing experience with knowledge of social media.
  • Program and staff management experience.
  • Volunteer management experience.
  • Talent recruitment experience.
  • Financial acumen.
Minimum Education
  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Advanced degree preferred.

Key Accountabilities

Key Accountabilities

ALUMNI SERVICES AND STRATEGIC PLANNING

  • Provides the vision, leadership and strategic oversight to establish Dartmouth as a higher education leader for alumni career and life development offerings.
  • Works closely with the Director of Market Research and conducts research and acquires background information on initiatives underway at peer institutions; creates and conducts surveys of alumni; evaluates changing demographics and trends; assesses constituent needs and develops strategies to meet those needs.
  • Creates a strategy for expanding alumni career enhancement and professional programs that recognizes and utilizes the expertise that exists within the alumni body and engages alumni in the professional development of students.
  • Oversees research of alumni benefits and services programs at peer institutions and presents a strategy for Dartmouth alumni and families, creating a possible source of revenue.
  • Develops a comprehensive strategy for programs that address the needs of alumni families, through on-campus, online, and regional programming including but not limited to Navigating College Admissions and Camp Dartmouth.
  • Develops events and programs that are offered on a fee-for-service basis to alumni and manages revenue streams that help to offset expenses.
  • Identifies alumni who are leaders in their fields and who are willing to provide advice and guidance to fellow alumni and Dartmouth students through a combination of communication tools and events.
  • Determines resources required to expand offerings and implement programming.
  • Develops a comprehensive marketing strategy that will enhance the visibility, stature and reputation of Dartmouth’s lifelong offerings to alumni for life and career development, enhancement and planning.
  • Serves as liaison to the undergraduate Center for Professional Development and to the career services offices in the professional schools to identify partnership opportunities.
  • Supports the creation of philanthropic connections and facilitates relationships and communications between alumni and their College.

STAFF MANAGEMENT

  • Hires, coaches, supports, and evaluates staff; leads and inspires staff to meet and exceed expectations.
  • Establishes appropriate metrics to assess individual and team performance; such systems should inspire all staff and engender commitment to reaching Alumni Relations goals.
  • Ensures a culture where effective teamwork, collaboration and innovation are expected, recognized, and rewarded; leads by example with regard to appropriate risk-taking, cross organizational cooperation, and clear standards of conduct.

OTHER

  • Demonstrates a commitment to diversity, inclusion, and cultural awareness through actions, interactions, and communications with others.
