Position Purpose

Thayer School of Engineering is looking for an outstanding web designer—front-end web developer—who is passionate about combining the art of design with the art of programming. The successful candidate will work alongside Thayer School’s Web Information Manager to bridge the gap between graphical design and technical implementation, taking an active role on both sides and helping to define how our websites look as well as how they work.

Skills & Knowledge

• Proven work experience in web design and development
• Proficient understanding of web markup, including HTML5, CSS3
• Proficient understanding of client-side scripting and Javascript
• Proficient understanding of cross-browser compatibility issues and ways to work around them
• Proficient knowledge of image authoring tools such as Photoshop and Sketch.app
• Strong knowledge of content management platforms and/or static site generators
• Working understanding of code versioning tools, such as Git and GitHub
• Working understanding of CSS pre-processing platforms, such as LESS and SASS
• Basic knowledge of SEO and SEM
• Aggressive problem diagnosis and creative problem solving skills
• Strong organizational skills to juggle multiple tasks within the constraints of timelines with business acumen
• Ability to work on your own, or in a team, with initiative
• Thoroughness and precision in your work
• Aptitude to learn rapidly and master diverse web technologies and techniques

Key Accountabilities

Key Accountabilities

• Create website layouts and user interfaces with well designed, reusable, efficient HTML/CSS/JS code
• Gather and refine specifications and requirements based on technical needs
• Ensure the technical feasibility and usability of designs
• Manage routine maintenance, expansion, and scalability of our websites
• Integrate data from various back-end services and content management systems
• Create and maintain website development and systems documentation
• Optimize website code for maximum speed and search engine visibility
• Collaborate with designers to support/develop Thayer’s visual identity and design intent
• Collaborate with content creators to support/develop Thayer’s online content and brand identity
• Collaborate with computing services engineers to support/develop Thayer’s information technology systems
• Stay engaged with emerging web technologies/industry trends and apply them into operations and activities appropriately
• Integrate data from various back-end services and content management systems
