Position Purpose

Manager of Operations of the Machine Shop supervises two Technical Instructors and, together with the Program Director, reports to the Director of Instructional Labs. This individual will also provide oversight of administrative functions of the area, as well as help implement future plans for the direction the Machine Shop. They will provide input into the strategic direction of the Machine Shop. As a member of the team of Technical Instructors, the manager will teach the next generation of designers and engineers how to turn their imaginations into real products. The Manager will lead our team of Technical Instructors to create and support our maker workshops, where designers and engineers make the products of the future.

Skills & Knowledge

Proven management skills, including demonstrated success building a team and developing staffing a shared leadership environment.
Ability to serve as an individual contributor and actively manage and stay engaged with staff needs.
Strong oral and written communication skills.
Our ideal technical instructor is a natural hands-on teacher and has or aspires to gain exceptional engineering skills, such as:
• A broad and deep understanding of techniques of mechanical design and analysis
• A wide knowledge of sophisticated materials and manufacturing techniques
• A desire and agility for learning new techniques
• Exceptional communication and collaborative skills
• Agility to configure and move around machinery and students and to hear and be heard over the commotion of a busy workshop

Minimum Experience

Management and development of a team in a diverse work setting.
• A portfolio of products and projects demonstrating breadth in engineering and teaching experience.
• Familiarity with workshop and/or makerspace tools.
• Experience in a teaching role helping others to increase their competency in the use of equipment using best instructional design practices.

Minimum Education

• Associates Degree in technical, engineering, science, or studio art, or equivalent
• Bachelor’s Degree preferred

MANAGEMENT
The Manager of Operations manages the daily activities of the exempt staff.
• Collaborates actively with the Maker/Machine Shop Program Director to ensure the vision is conveyed in the actions of the team.
• Supervise 2 Technical Instructors, ensuring opportunity for professional development.
• Ensure cross training and strategic planning for course coverage, fostering a team approach.
• Engages with the faculty committee as needed as indicated by the Director of Instructional Labs.
Oversight of administrative functions of the area.

INSTRUCTION
The shop Technical Instructor team is responsible for all aspects of maintaining the safe and effective operation of our design and maker shop facilities and envisioning the future of these resources, this includes:
• Mentoring student project groups through all phases of project design, modeling, and creation
• Training and managing users and student employees on machine and software use mechanical design and analysis
• Collaborating with faculty and others to implement new capabilities and new project based curricular elements
• Hand’s on work in the design, modification, creation of and/or revision to projects created in the Machine Shop
• Help to inspire, train, and manage student staff

SHOP OPERATIONS
In collaboration with the Program Director, in line with the strategic direction defined by the Director of Instructional Labs and the Program Director, will help implement changes to how the Machine shop functions and what services are provided as it continues to evolve.
