Position Purpose

Is responsible for the technical and administrative leadership of the Dartmouth College Electron Microscope Facility. Provides state-of-the-art microscopy services involving the utilization of highly sophisticated electron microscopy and other microanalytical techniques for use in local biological and materials research investigations.

Skills & Knowledge
  • Demonstrated proficiency and technical achievement in electron microscopy.
  • Excellent administrative and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience in and knowledge of digital image processing and analysis methods.
  • Commitment to diversity and to serving a diverse community.
Minimum Experience
  • Five years of relevant laboratory research experience.
  • Expertise in multiple technologies (e.g., TEM, SEM, lithography) preferred.
  • Experience with facility management, lab start-up, and/or capital equipment procurement preferred.
  • Experience in supervision and staff development.
Minimum Education
  • Master’s degree in the bio-medical, physical, earth or engineering sciences; or the equivalent.
  • A doctorate is highly desirable, but not required.

Key Accountabilities

Key Accountabilities
  • In consultation with faculty leadership, establishes facility operating goals, objectives, policies and procedures.
  • Oversees equipment utilization and identifies needs and costs for facility/equipment enhancement/replacement, providing information to the faculty lead.
  • Evaluates and, as appropriate, introduces or adapts new techniques in electron microscopy and microanalysis.
  • Performs and facilitates research studies as needed.
  • Hires, trains and supervises Facility staff.
  • Oversees the maintenance of Facility instrumentation.
  • Provides teaching support and training in fundamentals and new techniques.
  • Provides supporting documentation and analysis for grant-writing and development to support the Facility.
  • Assists faculty leadership in developing and managing the Facility budget.
  • Provides information and support to the Electron Microscope Committee and Chair.
-- Undertakes special assignments and performs other duties as assigned.
