Position Purpose

To provide research and laboratory management support in a biology lab at the Thayer School of Engineering.

Skills & Knowledge
  • Demonstrated abilities in standard cell and molecular biology techniques.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work in a collaborative team environment.
  • Familiarity with the operation of standard lab equipment and with lab safety and biosafety procedures.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Proficiency with web-based applications.
  • Proficiency with databases and Microsoft Excel.
  • Excellent organizational, time management, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work with and handle laboratory animals (mice, chicken embryos) and a variety of hazardous materials.
  • Strong commitment to a diverse working environment and to serving the needs of a large and diverse community.
Minimum Experience
  • Research experience in the fields of Biology, Chemistry, Physiology, or other biological science-related field that includes tissue culture or animal study in a research laboratory.
  • Ability to work independently and assist students.
  • Experience with embryo studies/animal studies, or desire to learn about them and assist with them.
  • Publications in peer-reviewed journals also a plus.

  • Advanced degree in Biology, Chemistry, or Physiology.

Key Accountabilities

Key Accountabilities

Research

  • Provides expertise and high-level technical skill in tissue culture, especially of cancer cells.
  • Conducts research relating to diseases/
  • Carries out standard cell biology and molecular techniques (e.g., immunohistochemistry, Western blotting, qPCR, etc.) and image/data analysis.
  • Assists in biophysics based research projects on the cellular and tissue level.
  • Trains research assistants in common molecular biology practices as needed.

Lab Management

  • Purchases laboratory reagents and services.
  • Monitors consumable spending.
  • Consolidates purchases for cost savings.
  • Improves work performance and efficiency.
  • Negotiates with vendors for the purchase of lab equipment and bulk quantity items.
  • Develops and implements quality assurance programs for maintenance and calibration of key equipment.
  • Trains laboratory staff in standard operating procedures and equipment specific requirements.
  • Assists new researchers to be added to lab’s animal protocols and assists with protocol amendments and maintains database of required training for lab personnel.
  • Resolves technical issues and provide assistance in laboratory operations planning.
