Position Purpose

Plan, organize, manage, and provide strategic leadership for, the activities of the Dana Biomedical Library and the Matthews-Fuller Health Sciences Library, in service to all of the departments, centers and institutes of the Geisel School of Medicine, constituencies (e.g. graduate medical education, nursing, patient education) of our clinical academic partners (Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center), the Department of Biological Sciences, and collaboratively support other relevant Dartmouth professional schools, departments, and programs.

Minimum Experience

• Seven years post-graduate degree in an academic health sciences or life sciences library.
• Five years of progressively higher administrative responsibilities.
• Library Professional III: 6-11 years post-graduate experience in an academic or research library in a relevant subject area.
• Library Professional IV: 11+ years post-graduate experience in an academic or research library in a relevant subject area

Minimum Education

ALA-accredited MLS or another applicable graduate degree.
• Certification from the Academy of Health Information Professionals preferred.
• Background in life/medical sciences preferred.

Leadership and Management

  • Leads strategic planning and innovation for the Biomedical Libraries, promoting a vision for these Libraries in a rapidly evolving environment. Works with the senior colleagues of the Medical School, Department of Biological Sciences, Dartmouth College Library and key stakeholders across Dartmouth to ensure that planning for the Biomedical Libraries resonates with institutional vision, planning and implementation.
  • Has responsibility for overall planning, organization, and implementation of activities of the Biomedical Libraries, coordinating the activities of the Biomedical Libraries as part of the overall network of Libraries at the College.
  • Works closely with the Executive Dean for Administration and Finance at Geisel and the Senior Associate Dean for Medical Education at Geisel to develop, administer, and oversee the operating budget for the Biomedical Libraries ensuring alignment with the mission of the Medical School and with prudent fiscal management:
    1. Balance the allocation of budgeted resources to best meet the needs of the different constituencies of the biomedical community
    2. Ensure adequate and appropriate staffing
    3. Coordinate information technology services and support for the educational/research communities
  • Recruits and mentors an agile, forward thinking, diverse and inclusive staff (approximately 21 FTE staff) and creates opportunities for their growth and professional development.
  • Is an active advocate for the missions of the biomedical community by fostering effective communication and relationships with faculty, students, and administrators in all constituent areas. Keeps constituencies informed of issues and trends in the library and biomedical information fields. Communicates with staff, students, faculty and leadership of various constituent groups across the institution and externally to establish goals and priorities.
  • Leads the development and integration of librarian participation in the curricula of the residential and online educational programs, including but not limited to the MD program (preclinical and clinical learning experiences), The Dartmouth Institute MPH programs, and graduate and undergraduate programs in the health and life sciences.
  • Ensures successful delivery and evaluation of innovative programs, services, and resources. Interacts with academic departments/programs to advance curricular and pedagogical goals.
  • Leads the development and integration of librarian participation in Graduate Medical Education at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center and Dartmouth-Hitchcock’s Center for Nursing Excellence.
  • Works with senior leadership at Geisel to ensure that accreditation requirements are met (e.g. LCME, NEASC)
  • Ensures the acquisition and delivery of scholarly information resources meeting the needs of 21st century researchers and constituents.
  • Oversees management of current facilities and plans for future user needs.
  • Member of the Dartmouth College Library Management Group, the management team for Dartmouth’s library system, proactively engaging other senior Dartmouth College Library colleagues in strategic collaboration. Participates on other teams and committees as appropriate.
  • Keeps abreast of advances in biomedical sciences, academic librarianship, and technology, and is involved in relevant national and regional professional organizations.
