Continuation is based upon available funds. Seeking an individual with a Bachelor’s degree with a major in one of the biological sciences or the equivalent and two years of relevant laboratory/research experience to work in our Space Medicine Innovations laboratory. Applicants should have the ability to work independently and apply critical thinking and sound judgment. Must be able to demonstrate competence in laboratory methods, procedures, and techniques. Applicants should be self-directed and have good organizational and time management skills. Knowledge of computers and software applications including Office, Endnote, Matlab, MySQL and other standard computer software required. Familiarity with Javascript, HTML, and PHP is desired.

Position Purpose

To set up and conduct a variety of laboratory tests and experiments in support of research studies conducted in the Space Medicine Innovations laboratory by applying established methods, procedures, and techniques.

Experiments

  • Conducts experiments by applying established methods and procedures in the areas of human physiology and psychology. Lab works on experiments in multiple areas including hearing, vision, hyperbaric oxygen, computer based psychological training and treatment programs, and virtual reality.
  • Sets up and assists with research protocols and experiments under the general guidance of the principal investigator and laboratory manager in the laboratory; may have primary responsibility for independently setting up, performing, and troubleshooting less complex experiments.
  • Observes experimental results in progress and maintains written records of activities and observations; applies past experience and precedents to identify and troubleshoot problems. Anticipates unexpected findings and assists in troubleshooting.
  • Reports experimental results to the principal investigator and other senior laboratory personnel and assists in their analysis.
  • Adheres to laboratory safety requirements including general and chemical/hazardous waste safety.
  • May help with experiments with swine or mice.

Records

  • Collects and analyzes data using Microsoft Office, Matlab, and other programs.
  • Prepares appropriate and understandable representations of data such as graphs, charts, tables, and statistical summaries. Contributes to the preparation of scientific manuscripts.
  • Conducts literature searches to assist in establishing new laboratory techniques.
  • Assists with IRB submissions, subject record management, and regulatory paperwork.
  • Assists with IACUC applications.

Technical

  • Assists with filming and rendering virtual realty films.
  • Assists with development of psychological training and treatment programs including coding new modules and debugging software.
  • Assists with developing queries of SQL databases.

Laboratory

  • Accomplishes day-to-day care and housekeeping of laboratory including ordering supplies, maintaining computerized records associated with laboratory activities.
  • Instructs others in laboratory methods, procedures, and techniques and provides technical guidance and direction as required.
  • Assists with coordination of off campus study sites.

Animals

  • May assist in the maintenance of mice, rats or swine including weighing of animals, physiological measurements, and entering data into computerized data bases.
  • May assist in animal experiments that involve hyper- or hypo-baric exposures in the altitude chamber or hyperbaric chamber.
