Position Purpose

To provide both long-term leadership and immediate management guidance and oversight to the development and management of the Hopkins Center for the Arts business activity. In the absence of the Director and Managing Director, acts as the Director in charge of the Center.

Minimum Experience
  • Five years of experience in financial/business planning and human resources management in a complex educational or arts-related organization; or the equivalent.
  • Staff supervision experience.
  • Extensive experience in collaborating on complex projects.
  • Previous experience with revenue generating and/or fund raising functions preferred
Minimum Education
  • Bachelors Degree in Accounting or Business Management or the equivalent in relevant experience and education
  • MBA preferred.

Fiscal Operations Management

  • In collaboration with the Director, translates Dartmouth fiscal and administrative policy into administrative practice. Undertakes planning, research and analysis for new Center policies and programs. Provides leadership and guidance in the development and implementation of business and financial policies, practices and controls for tracking financial performance.
  • As a member of the executive management team, provides leadership in the development of long-range and strategic fiscal plans. Performs analyses of Hopkins Center services, events, projects, and practices with a special interest in their fiscal and administrative effectiveness. Develops forecasting models and appropriate financial management recommendations concerning costs involved and sources of funding. Ensures funding models keep pace with business trends.
  • Manages the development of the Hopkins Center budget to meet the fiscal plan. Collaborates with all administrative directors in the development of program budgets and annual projections. Consolidates program submissions into a Center budget proposal, preparing and incorporating budget projections for income and expenses. Supports the Director in presenting and defending the Hopkins Center budget proposals.
  • Establishes budget controls and ensures accuracy in charging of expenditures; performs analyses and projections of revenues and expenses; investigates problem areas; directs or recommends corrective action.
  • Provides direction in determining the rates for fees to be charged for services and events and ensures costs are properly charged and recovered. Collaborates with program and administrative directors in the development of improved management planning/reporting tools in response to program initiatives and challenges.
  • Reviews all performance artist contracts and capital equipment purchases, works with Procurement, and is co-signer in conjunction with program directors.
  • Provides direction and guidance to the year-end closing of all Hopkins Center and program accounts.
  • Manages endowment and gift incomes and reserve accumulations; ensures funds are being used in accordance with donor’s wishes and College policy.
  • Researches, develops and assembles fiscal components for all Hopkins Center grant submissions to private foundations and state, regional and federal agencies, insuring that critical needs are portrayed clearly and effectively to grantors. Develops effective and persuasive financial reports for other key fund-raising initiatives. Works with the Office of Sponsored Projects to monitor all grant proposals and transactions.
  • Serves as the business representative for the Hopkins Center with Purchasing, Internal Audit, and Controller’s Office, Budget Office, Sponsored Projects, Endowment Administration, the Provost’s Office and external consultants. Represents the Hopkins Center on various College committees or at special meetings as requested.

Staff Development

  • Acts as the Center’s principal liaison with the Human Resources Office for recruiting activities, hiring salaries, definition of duties, performance evaluation and salary adjustments. Reviews and approves all administrative and staff appointments and payroll transactions. Advises on the impact of distribution of increases to the salary structure, merit increases, benefit increases etc..
  • Serves as a resource to program and administrative directors, faculty, staff and students for interpretation of and guidance on the application of College fiscal and administrative policies and procedures, particularly in the areas of financial and human resource management. Researches and develops advisories for directors on questions of personnel management and compliance with College and governmental funding organization requirements.
  • Supervises and directs the work of the Hop Business Specialist in the Hopkins Center Business Office. Hires employees, makes work assignments, evaluates their job performance, and provides on the job training and recommendations for formal training, recognition and disciplinary action.
  • In conjunction with program and administrative directors, identifies Hopkins Center-wide administrative and system needs (i.e. equipment, hardware, software, training programs etc) and implements or proposes responses to meet such needs. Investigates and makes recommendations concerning the implementation of new equipment and systems to the center.
