Position Purpose

To support the Director in achieving the mission of the Humanities Center, to help curate new programming, and to manage and track related administrative responsibilities.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of national and regional trends in humanities programming and scholarship.

  • Commitment to diversity and to serving the needs of a diverse community.
Minimum Experience
  • Evidence of successful experience with humanities programming and strong administrative capabilities.
  • Demonstrated background in higher education, with experience both as faculty and administrator.
  • Experience working with the diverse members of a campus community and the capacity to develop strong working relationships across departments and disciplines.
Minimum Education
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant area or the equivalent in education and experience.
  • Master’s degree strongly preferred, with significant evidence of publication, scholarship, and college-level teaching.

Key Accountabilities

Key Accountabilities
  • In keeping with the mission of Dartmouth and the Center, the Assistant Director works collaboratively with the Director, faculty, academic deans, and students to support and extend the Center’s impact.
  • Supports and develops relationships with faculty, deans, and students to maintain strong ties between a wide variety of constituencies on campus and the work of the Humanities Center.
  • Links and leverages existing structures and programs that connect the Humanities on campus and develops external relations with Humanities centers at peer institutions.
  • Tracks and assesses the Center’s successes and shares results at regular intervals and in appropriate campus and national venues.
  • Remains current with trends and activities in the Humanities nationally and internationally and shares that information as needed to improve the Center’s programming.
  • Supports and guides as required the search for external funding for the Center’s activities.
  • Creates effective materials in a variety of media to develop greater visibility for the Center and communicates effectively with all partners about the Center’s aims and progress.
  • Manages administrative details for the Center’s programs, ensuring that events and initiative are run on time and on budget.
  • Develops initiatives in programming as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
