Position Purpose

Thayer School is celebrating its 150th anniversary, and has a long and rich history of educating students to serve the world. The modern story of Thayer School is much like its roots, steeped in tradition but also forward looking to make a lasting impact on the greatest challenges. To develop material that conveys key themes and messages as outlined by senior administrators, to tell the story of Thayer School for advancement and communications materials. The Writer researches and writes strategically focused content for Thayer publications and performs a range of communications and advancement assignments.

  • Skill in performing public affairs assignments that advance the goals of an academic institution.
  • Ability to recognize and capitalize on the news value of Thayer School events, activities, and achievements.
  • Ability to recognize and deal with institutional issues in ways that advance the institution. Skill in human relations; ability to work productively with diverse constituencies.
  • Ability to gain the trust and confidence of senior leadership in the Thayer School faculty and administration.
  • Able to exercise a high degree of initiative and judgment.
  • Able to handle sensitive information with tact and maintain confidentiality.
  • Demonstrated writing skill and ability to produce a high volume of content under deadline and sometimes conflicting pressures.

Key Accountabilities

Key Accountabilities

• Produces strategic content for periodicals, web, social media, and other communications vehicles.
• In collaboration with the Senior Director of Communications and the Associate Dean for Advancement, participates in long-term editorial strategic planning for Thayer’s communications vehicles and content in collaboration.
• Publicizes the work of faculty by researching stories, sharing information with colleagues, and producing content that supports media relations efforts.
• Identifies, researches, and creates written stories and other materials that will advance the institution’s strategic goals, focusing on assigned beat.
• Gathers, analyzes, and synthesizes data and information into written materials for print and online publications, adapting writing style to multiple audiences, voices, and media.
• Works as a member of a team that coordinates a broad array of publications that convey strategic messages about the College to its core audiences. Coordinates content projects with colleagues across the institution for efficiency and effectiveness.
• Produces a high volume of material, balancing priorities to manage competing deadlines.
• Approaches projects creatively, critically, and analytically, incorporating multimedia and social media.
• Develops and maintains relationships with key leaders in the administration and faculty as well as campus constituencies, adhering to best practices for customer relationship management and focusing on coverage of assigned beat.
• Fosters respectful communication and collaboration within a diverse community.
• Supports the editorial, production, and processes for Communications and Advancement.
• Participates in editorial process, identifying and selecting content appropriate to the vehicle and audience.
• Proofreads and fact-checks copy, maintaining accuracy and consistent editorial standards.
• Assigns photography projects and gathers art and multimedia content.
• Manages production of print and digital publications, as required.
• Publishes content to online vehicles, as required.
• Demonstrates a commitment to diversity, inclusion, and cultural awareness through actions, interactions, and communications with others.
