Position Purpose

To collect and process soil, plant, and air samples and to set up and conduct experiments in support of research studies directed at understanding the vulnerability of soil organic carbon to global change.

Skills & Knowledge
  • Ability to work alone or in teams outside under adverse conditions
  • Ability to work independently and apply critical thinking and sound judgment.
  • Good organizational and time management skills.
  • Willingness to work with/be exposed to hazardous materials such chemicals.
  • Knowledge of computers and software applications.
  • Knowledge of standard computer software packages for data analysis and graphical presentations, and on-line literature search engines.
Minimum Experience
  • Experience conducting research outside in the field.
  • Experience working in a laboratory beyond lab sections of college classes.
  • Experience working with chemistry protocols for environmental analyses
Minimum Education

Bachelor of Science degree with a major in the Biological Sciences, Environmental Sciences, or Geology.

Key Accountabilities

Key Accountabilities

* Collects air, soil, and plant samples from various terrestrial ecosystems following established protocols
* Sets up and performs soil extraction and fractionation protocols and experiments under the general guidance of the principal investigator
* Performs various analyses of carbon, metals, and nutrients in soils, plants, and extracts and of carbon in air samples using established protocols
* Accomplishes day-to-day care and housekeeping of laboratory.
* Assess the need for and orders all supplies and reagents needed for experiments.
* Collects and analyzes data resulting from experimentation/analyses
