Position Purpose

As Senior Mechanical Engineer, performs master planning, design, design direction and review, construction administration and troubleshooting for the College’s mechanical systems. Areas of responsibility include Central Chilled Water Plants and distribution, and building HVAC, controls, fire protection, and plumbing systems.

Dartmouth’s Campus Services Division is responsible for planning, design, construction and operation of Dartmouth’s buildings, campus landscape and infrastructure. Dartmouth’s facilities include over 5 million square feet of space in 165 buildings. These facilities serve over 5,600 students and 5,000 faculty and staff in a variety of academic, research, administrative, athletic, and residential spaces.

Skills & Knowledge

• Demonstrated ability to analyze and solve problems associated with the operation and maintenance of mechanical systems and equipment.
• Strong knowledge of institutional building mechanical and central plant systems, DDC controls, energy conservation and commissioning practices, water treatment practices, construction techniques, drafting standards, and construction estimating.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Adept at working with computerized systems.
• Demonstrated ability to negotiate and resolve issues in a diplomatic manner, and to mentor others.
• Familiarity with and skilled in interpreting construction documents and contracts.
• Familiarity with town, state, and federal codes and ordinances.
• Strong customer service orientation.
• Ability to handle emergency situations and react in a calm professional manner.
• Commitment to diversity and to serving the needs of a diverse population.

Minimum Experience

Ten-plus years of relevant and progressive experience in mechanical design, including familiarity with building HVAC, fire protection, plumbing, and Central Chilled Water Plant systems.

Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications.

Minimum Education

Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.

Professional engineering registration in the State of New Hampshire or the capability of achieving registration within one year.

Planning and Design
• Supports the Director of Engineering and Utilities in developing and implementing campus mechanical system master planning for campus heating, cooling, and controls systems. Assists with developing RFPs and guiding and overseeing consultant studies. Assists the Director of Engineering and Utilities and Energy Program Manager in developing and implementing strategies to meet campus greenhouse gas reduction and rewewable energy goals.
• Provides mechanical engineering oversight of new building designs and major renovations. Provides technical direction and guidance to Project Managers and consultants. Works with design consultants to set performance goals for mechanical systems and facility energy performance. Provides design reviews, value engineering reviews, selective submittal reviews, and project closeout and commissioning oversight.
• Analyzes the campus facilities and stakeholder requirements to provide design direction for mechanical system renovation and replacement projects. Provides scope of work and/or basis of design to consultants and Dartmouth in-house engineers as applicable.
• For Dartmouth in-house designed projects, develops drawings, specifications and purchase requests as required to implement upgrades and additions to campus and building systems. Provides construction cost estimates for proposed projects.
Updates the College mechanical design guidelines to set and communicate the standards of design, performance, material and workmanship to all those who work at or for the college in the design and construction of mechanical systems. Reviews consultant’s designs to monitor conformance to campus design guidelines, and state building codes.
• Provides technical guidance and oversight of campus HVAC control strategies for existing and new facilities to provide comfort, performance, and energy efficiency.



Operational Support/Troubleshooting
• Works proactively with all trades shops and department clients to troubleshoot mechanical problems and coordinate engineered project installations. Meets with supervisors to review status of projects and problems encountered in the operation and maintenance of the building, distribution and plant systems.
• Develops recommended solutions to operational problems; identifies situations where problems are indicative of broader issues; addresses problems directly related to the existing or proposed mechanical design.
• Assists in the preparation of and management of the Water Treatment Contract for campus HVAC systems.



Commissioning
• Oversees the development and execution of commissioning plans by outside consultants.
• On small project develops and implements the commissioning plan utilizing FO&M personnel.
• Works with Energy Management team to provide technical input to retro-commissioning and persistence commissioning programs.



Management
• Provides day to day oversight and mentoring to Mechanical Engineers in Engineering Department.

Other
• Demonstrates a commitment to diversity, inclusion, and cultural awareness through actions, interactions, and communications with others.
