Position Purpose

Serves as Energy Management System Engineer for the Facilities Operations and Management Energy Program. Oversees day-to-day operations of the Campus Energy Management System (CEMS), including connectivity to building energy meters; building automation systems; and Heating/Electric Plant data. Oversees management and maintenance of building energy metering systems. Collects and analyzes data from CEMS and uses CEMS to build and run monitoring-based commissioning (MBCx) reports. Tracks Energy Program investments and results, and maintains/updates content of Energy website. Supports Dartmouth’s commitment to improve the effectiveness of energy production and use on campus, and meeting our Greenhouse Gas Reduction Goals.

Dartmouth’s Campus Services Division is responsible for planning, design, construction and operation of Dartmouth’s buildings, campus landscape and infrastructure. Dartmouth’s facilities include over 5 million square feet of space in 165 buildings. These facilities serve over 5,600 students and 5,000 faculty and staff in a variety of academic, research, administrative, athletic, and residential spaces.

Skills & Knowledge

• Experience in computer software development best practices, hardware platforms, networking, security, database administration, and data acquisition systems
• Knowledge of institutional building HVAC and central plant systems, DDC controls, lighting systems, energy efficiency and commissioning practices
• Knowledge of building controls and metering systems hardware and software.
• Knowledge of statistics and data analysis and experience with statistical and data analysis software.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Skilled in developing and working with complex information management systems
• Familiarity with analytical computing and database environments (Excel, MS SQL, Oracle, FileMaker, etc.)
• Familiarity with computing networks and administration
• Familiarity with website design, maintenance, or content management
• Exceptional organizational, interpersonal, communication and leadership skills
• Excellent professional judgment and discretion in handling confidential information
• Demonstrated commitment to sustainability
• Commitment to diversity and to serving the needs of a diverse population

Minimum Experience

• 10+ years of demonstrated experience in computing system planning, engineering, and implementation
• 2-5 years’ experience in applying analytics with a deep curiosity to ask questions and develop solutions
• Extensive experience in reporting methods, with a demonstrated ability to tailor presentations to wide constituent base
• Demonstrated ability to think, plan, and act with minimal supervision

Minimum Education

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Computer Science or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Key Accountabilities

Key Accountabilities

Systems Oversight
• Serves as institutional, functional liaison to identify and troubleshoot CEMS operating issues, including connectivity with FO&M, Administrative Computing, Network Services, and other vendor(s) systems. Responsibilities include:

Performing day-to-day health checks on metering systems and their connections to the CEMS
Performing day-to-day health checks on CEMS connectivity to Building Management Systems, Heating/Electric Plant systems and other systems added to the CEMS
Issuing Work Orders for repair of metering systems
Issuing Work Orders for data connections to CEMS that are found to be malfunctioning
Performing tests of any system changes resulting from upgrades or enhancements.
Providing input on desired system enhancements of CEMS.

• Ensures timely and accurate updates of CEMS database(s) from changes in space database and other data sources (addition/deletion of metering points, metering formula changes, etc.)
• Oversees metering program to ensure maintenance of metering systems, accuracy of meter readings and timeliness of utility billing.
• Regularly performs field inspections/audits to verify accuracy and reliability of information provided by CEMS.
• Assists end-users to view energy reports and data. Provides periodic retraining in the use of the reports.
• Collaborates with Campus Computing Systems personnel to resolve operating issues and to keep CEMS and other connected operating systems and software up to date.

• Responsible for running the monthly process of preparing utility billing for each campus building account (steam, electric, chilled water for approximately 125 buildings).
• Assists in uploading data to Oracle Financial system and cross checking results prior to financial posting.
• Compiles and performs monthly database updates for campus energy supply, energy production/transformation, and energy use.
• Provides annual budgeting and periodic updates to estimate campus energy use for future fiscal periods.
• Builds and maintains reporting systems to track investment and savings results of the Energy Program.
• Consults with Finance Office and prepares quarterly budget and cost accounting information for Energy Program projects.
• Develops and distributes periodic reports which provide information and data needed to accelerate progress towards Dartmouth’s energy and sustainability goals.
• Provides energy and water use data to the Office of Sustainability for annual reporting of campus Greenhouse Gas Emissions and sustainability efforts.

Support for Energy Efficiency and Persistence Commissioning Programs
• Supports Energy Efficiency and Persistence Commissioning programs by developing and analyzing diagnostics, analytics, reports, alarms, key performance indicators (KPIs) and interfaces for tracking day-to-day, project-by-project and overall campus achievement of energy and greenhouse gas (GHG) reductions.
• Provides software tools, training and support to Dartmouth staff and outside consultants and vendors to enable them to access and analyze energy system data.
• Establish systems to collect, analyze and report data related to energy consumption and ensure correctness and integrity of that data. Incorporates energy targets into analytics.

Support for Campus Metering Systems
• Provides guidance on the types of meters, logging points and intervals, communication protocols, upgrades and improvements required for the metering systems to meet the various constituents’ needs.
• Provides guidance and training to FO&M Electrical Shop in support of campus energy meter maintenance program

Energy User-Community Collaboration and Development
• Maintains and adds content to Dartmouth’s Energy website.
• Works with 3rd party experts/consultants to add functionality to Dartmouth’s Energy website.
• Builds energy reports and dashboards to showcase specific projects and aggregated results of Dartmouth’s Energy programs.
• Supports academic mission of the College by providing access to energy data for student and faculty energy-related projects.
• Provides mentoring in data acquisition and system analytics to student interns.
