Position Purpose

Research Programmer/Analyst I (DRM C, Exempt)
To support research programming and analytic activities for principal investigators and their project teams at the Dartmouth Institute of Health Policy and Clinical Practice using administrative claims datasets and other supporting data that will eventually lead to publication of health services research work, presentations, and grant proposals.

Research Programmer/Analyst II (DRM D, Exempt)
To support research programming and analytic activities for principal investigators and their project teams at the Dartmouth Institute of Health Policy and Clinical Practice using administrative claims datasets and other supporting data that will eventually lead to publication of health services research work, presentations, and grant proposals.

Senior Technical Research Programmer/Analyst (PDL A, Exempt)
To support research programming and analytic activities for principal investigators and their project teams at the Dartmouth Institute of Health Policy and Clinical Practice using administrative claims datasets and other supporting data that will eventually lead to publication of health services research work, presentations, and grant proposals.

Skills & Knowledge

Research Programmer/Analyst I

  • Strong interpersonal & written communication skills.
  • Ability to understand administrative claims data.
  • Intermediate understanding of programming/analytic concepts.
  • With guidance, run appropriate statistical tests.
  • Basic understanding of health services research concepts and methods.
  • Strong desire to be a part of a health services research team.

Research Programmer/Analyst II

  • Strong interpersonal & written communication skills.
  • Solid SAS knowledge, including experience using SAS functions, SAS macros, and merging large datasets.
  • Solid understanding of administrative claims data.
  • Demonstrated data management expertise.
  • Understanding of statistical methodology expertise, including the ability to identify and run appropriate statistical tests.
  • Solid understanding of health services research concepts and methods.
  • Strong desire to be a part of a health services research team.
  • Proven ability to use sound judgement when interacting with internal and external collaborators.
  • Commitment to diversity and to serving the needs of a diversity.

Senior Technical Research Programmer/Analyst

  • Extensive understanding of rigorous and efficient research design, implementation and analytic methodologies, particularly around health services research.
  • Advanced SAS knowledge required, including demonstrated experience using SAS functions, development of SAS macros, merging large datasets, and modeling.
  • Other statistical software and/or programming languages (i.e. SPSS, STATA, R, Python) preferred.
  • Demonstrated data management and statistical methodology expertise.
  • Ability to work independently, taking initiative to advance methods and studies proactively.
  • Demonstrated claims data expertise with knowledge and understanding of other types of data preferred.
  • Proven ability to effectively mentor analytic activities, interacting with all levels of staff, management and executive leadership both internally and externally.
  • Proven ability to use sound judgement when interacting with internal and external collaborators.
Minimum Experience

Research Programmer/Analyst I

  • 1-2 years of research programming/analysis in health care or related field.
  • Experience in epidemiologic studies and clinical trials are preferred.

Research Programmer/Analyst II

  • 3-5 years of research programming/analysis in health care or related field.
  • 2-3 years demonstrated experience managing complex data systems.
  • 2-3 years demonstrated experience in health services research and claims data preferred.

Senior Technical Research Programmer/Analyst

  • 5-7 years of professional experience in statistics, data management, epidemiology or related field.
  • 3-5 years demonstrated experience managing complex data systems and mentoring junior research programmers/analysts.
  • 3-5 years demonstrated experience in health services research and claims data required.
Minimum Education

Research Programmer/Analyst I

  • Bachelor’s degree in statistics, economics, math or related computer fields.

Research Programmer/Analyst II

  • Bachelor’s degree in statistics, economics, math or related computer fields.

Senior Technical Research Programmer/Analyst

  • Master’s degree in public health, statistics, or related field required.

Key Accountabilities

Research Programmer/Analyst I (DRM C, Exempt)
Programming Dataset Development

  • With oversight, summarizes and delivers results of data linkage activities to research team(s) in reports including results of inclusion/exclusion criteria applied to extracted/combined datasets, flowcharting datasets used to develop extracts, and other requested summary reports.
  • Follows specifications for data collection, organization and storage to ensure replicability.
  • Under the direction of investigator led project teams and the mentorship of a senior/principal research programmer/analyst: merges, transforms, and manipulates dataset structure for optimum analytic structure.

Research, Development and Infrastructure Activities

  • Under the direction of a senior/principal research programmer/analyst, prepares written and oral reports from the results of the dataset development.
  • Participates in research project team discussions about the research concepts and goals, asking questions to help facilitate a strong foundational understanding of the research project.
  • Develops and appropriately stores data dictionaries and data libraries to facilitate subsequent analysis of the data.
  • With oversight from senior/principal research programmer/analyst, reviews and builds internal and external literature libraries on the research project background to further understand the research concepts and check results.
  • Assists in the development of data and system infrastructure for the benefit of the DAC.

Research Activities

  • Interacts and collaborates with investigators and operations personnel within the institution and with scientists from other organizations and institutions associated with the research program.
  • May participate in the preparation of written grant proposals, research reports, and scientific presentations and published articles.

Research Programmer/Analyst II (DRM D, Exempt)
Programming Dataset Development

  • Under the direction of Faculty lead project teams: identifies appropriate data sources, extracts and combines data across sources for specific projects. Implements project specific programming/analytic specifications in coordination with Faculty/research project team, a Senior Research Programmer/Analyst and/or Principle Research Programmer/Analyst.
  • Independently summarizes and delivers results of data linkage activities to research team(s) in reports including results of inclusion/exclusion criteria applied to extracted/combined datasets, flowcharting datasets used to develop extracts, and other requested summary reports.
  • Follows specifications for data collection, organization and storage to ensure replicability.
  • Under the direction of Faculty lead project teams: merges, transforms, and manipulates dataset structure for optimum analytic structure. Communicates responsively, obtaining agreement with the research team on any and all data/research method decisions before implementation.

  • Independently prepares written and oral reports from the results of the dataset development and disseminates results to research team in a timely manner.
  • Independently prepares for and engages thoughtfully in research project discussions about the research concepts and goals. Asks questions to help facilitate a strong foundational understanding of the research project.

  • Provides feedback on the development of data and system architecture in meetings and committees. May work on small infrastructure projects as needed.

Senior Technical Research Programmer/Analyst (PDL A, Exempt)
Programming and Dataset Development

  • Independently identifies appropriate data sources, extracts, and combines data across sources. Designs, develops and implements programming/analytic specifications for specific projects.
  • Independently summarizes and delivers results of data linkage activities to research team(s) in reports including results of inclusion/exclusion criteria applied to extracted/combined datasets, flowcharting datasets used to develop extracts, and other requested summary reports.
  • Independently merges, transforms, and manipulates dataset structure for optimum analytic structure. Initiates communication and obtains agreement with the research team on any and all data/research method decisions before implementation.

Research, Development and Infrastructure Activities

  • Independently prepares written and oral reports from the results of the dataset development and disseminates results to research team in a timely manner.
  • Proactively prepares for and engages thoughtfully in research project discussions about the research concepts and goals. Asks questions to help facilitate a strong foundational understanding of the research project.
  • Develops and maintains documentation of research projects including, but not limited to, data dictionaries/libraries, programming/analytic specifications, inclusion/exclusion criteria flowcharts/matrices, and headers to ensure replication.
  • Independently reviews, builds and maintains library of internal and external literature on the research project background to further understand the research concepts and check results. Independently categorizes literature based on applicability to project and summarizes findings for presentation to the research team.
  • Provides high level system infrastructure activities and QC implementation following best practices.

Other
