Position Purpose

To support strategic financial decision-making at Dartmouth College through high quality financial reporting, analysis, and recommendations.

Skills & Knowledge
  • Demonstrated skill in advanced financial analysis and financial modeling of complex data
  • Ability to prepare and present complex information in a clear, coherent way that supports fact-based decision-making
  • In-depth knowledge of spreadsheet packages (Excel) and standard desktop applications (Word, Powerpoint)
  • Knowledge of Hyperion, a plus
  • Adept at using ad hoc reporting tools
  • Strong critical thinking and creative problem-solving skills
  • Adept ability to deliver against multiple and competing priorities at once
  • Able to balance the need to deliver results both quickly and accurately
  • Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills. Able to work effectively across schools, divisions, and functions. Inspires others through commitment, teamwork, and colleagiality
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. Able to present information concisely, clearly, and confidently to a wide variety of audiences
  • Self-starter with demonstrated ability to work independently and confidently, set priorities and meet deadlines
  • Sound financial judgment
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of personal and financial information
  • Commitment to diversity and to serving the needs of a diverse population
Minimum Experience
  • 5-7 years of experience analyzing and interpreting data, financial modeling, and making fact-based recommendations
  • Demonstrated experience in supporting key operational decisions with high quality financial analysis and firm recommendations.
  • Significant experience partnering on a cross-functional basis with key financial and operational leaders.
  • Extensive experience participating as both a leader and member of teams
  • Experience supporting executive teams desired
  • Experience in higher education preferred

Data Collection, Financial Analysis, Financial Modeling & Recommendations

  • Provides effective financial analysis, budget monitoring, and outreach for a portfolio of assigned areas (divisions, departments, and key line items on the income statement).
  • Collaborates effectively with financial and non-financial staff across the institution in the gathering, modeling, and analysis of financial and operational data.
  • Supports the annual operating budget and long-range financial planning processes with insightful financial analysis, sound assumptions and estimates, and firm recommendations
  • Supports monthly and quarterly management reporting and analysis with insightful variance explanations and summarizations of risks and opportunities
  • Performs a variety of ad hoc, free-form financial and operational analysis to address questions and information needs from many constituencies (Board of Trustees, Budget Committee, financial and non-financial leaders, etc.) as they arise.
  • Identifies and researches appropriate sources of information to answer questions on a variety of complex, finance-related topics. Validates the integrity of data sources.
  • Identifies relevant benchmarks and standards for comparative analysis and performance metrics.
  • Actively identifies areas where in-depth financial and operational analysis can lead to a deeper understanding of results, trends, risks and opportunities. Consults with financial leaders to offer ideas and recommendations.
  • Applies skills in financial modeling and statistical analysis to develop scenarios and to make recommendations.
  • Ensures security and confidentiality of sensitive information and materials. Maintains manual and computerized records.

Financial Reporting & Business Insight

  • Summarizes data and analytical findings to support executive-level decision-making. Employs creativity, quantitative skills and expertise in utilizing spreadsheets, graphics and other presentation tools to develop presentations.
  • Identifies needs and assists in the development of financial reports to provide better management information to fiscal officers and department managers. Collaborates with resources in the Financial Planning & Budget department and Financial Reporting department to implement and improve standardized financial report.
  • Prepares financial reports, presentations, and special projects for senior management and others. Reports may include financial forecasts, trend analyses, historical data compilation, ratio and peer comparisons, etc.
  • Presents findings and recommendations to a wide variety of constituents at Dartmouth College.

Other Duties

  • Represent AVP of Financial Planning & Budget Office and the office in general at meetings, activities, and working groups
  • Participate on cross-functional teams by assuming an active, collaborative role
  • Demonstrates a commitment to diversity, inclusion, and cultural awareness through actions, interactions, and communications with others.
