Position Purpose

Serves as number two editor, and as the primary assignment editor for Dartmouth Alumni Magazine, performing editing functions and overseeing various print and digital content and operations. Acts as chief operating officer in the absence of the editor.

Skills & Knowledge
  • Management and supervisory experience running editorial operations for print/digital publication
  • Superb skill in editing and writing, as well as conceiving story ideas
  • A love of learning and intellectual curiosity
  • Extremely adept at assigning stories and working with freelance writers
  • Record of developing a network of strong and reliable contributors
  • Self motivated; ability to set priorities and manage multiple projects and deadlines
  • High degree of originality and creativity
  • Sensitivity to issues of confidentiality
  • Successful collaborative and flexible work experience;
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Negotiating skills for securing contractual assignments.
  • Wide-ranging interest in magazines and print magazine and digital journalism
  • Working knowledge of InCopy, InDesign, and Drupal
Minimum Experience
  • Seven-plus years of experience in magazine journalism and print and digital story assignment, line editing
  • Five years of editorial staff management, including nurturing and initiating creative thinking
  • Experience in a broad range of publications preferred
  • Proven ability to develop, assign and edit high-quality, multiplatform storytelling
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain high standards for all content and deliver content that is engaging and editorially compelling
Minimum Education
  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism or the equivalent

Key Accountabilities

Key Accountabilities

EDITORIAL (PRINT AND DIGITAL) OPERATIONS

  • Serves as primary editor for majority of regular contributors, making assignments and editing them into final form for editor
  • Collaborates with editor on issue planning and provides editorial input on digital content
  • Originates, researches, assigns and edits features, departments and other parts of the magazine
  • Writes assignment letters outlining story and other contractual arrangements with freelance authors and faculty. Ensures requirements are met and payment is made
  • Solicits articles ideas and new writers for the magazine. Continually identifies and cultivates new contributors
  • Writes news items and sidebars for Campus as well as occasional departments and features
  • Compiles and edits Letters department; responds to all letter writers
  • Responds to story idea pitches and queries
  • Collaborates with editor on display copy: captions, headlines and quoteouts
  • Supervises copy-editing, fact checking and trafficking of all layouts
  • Contributes to story idea sessions. Provides leadership in terms of balance and tone of story ideas

COORDINATION/COMMUNICATION

  • Attends College events to stay abreast of activities
  • Works with College departments to keep informed of news pertinent to the magazine
  • Initiates and maintains contact with alumni, students, administrators and, most important, faculty
  • Demonstrates a commitment to diversity, inclusion, and cultural awareness through actions, interactions, and communications with others.

STAFF MANAGEMENT

  • Manages associate editor, editorial assistant, and student interns
  • Assists editor in hiring editorial personnel and in hiring advertising and front-office positions.
