Position Purpose

To serve as a partner to the Executive Director of the Dartmouth College Fund (DCF) in raising the maximum current-use dollars and increasing alumni participation through class-based fund-raising efforts. To provide strategic leadership and effective management and inspiration to fundraising officers responsible for securing higher levels of annual support from a diverse constituency. Manages a comprehensive program of face-to-face, mail, phone and electronic solicitations executed by both a complex and “high-expectation” volunteer cadre and field staff.

Minimum Experience
  • Eight years of progressively responsible experience in a complex development operation with a proven record of successful fundraising.
  • Demonstrated success soliciting and closing six-figure gifts.
  • Experience managing staff within an annual fund and working with sophisticated volunteers in a class-based fundraising structure.
  • Demonstrated experience working with senior administrators, trustees, and top volunteers.
  • Excellent staff and volunteer management experience.
  • Excellent leadership, coaching and team-building skills evidenced through references from peers, subordinates and supervisors.
  • Comprehensive campaign experience preferred.
Minimum Education
  • Bachelor’s degree with preference for advanced degree or experience that enhances management skills.

Staff Management Accountabilities:

  • Hires, coaches, supports, and evaluates staff responsible for identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of prospects capable of making annual fund gifts of $250,000 or more over a five-year period as well as increasing class participation.
  • Serves as an accessible resource and role model to DCF staff for coaching with solicitation and prospect strategies and volunteer management challenges. Offers new approaches and techniques and seeks to provide creative solutions to complex solicitations.
  • Serves as a resource for leadership volunteers and ensures they are equipped with the training necessary to carry out their responsibilities and are given appropriate recognition for their contributions to the growth of the Fund.
  • In partnership with the Executive Director, establishes annual class goals, reunion targets and metrics to assess individual and team performance; such systems should inspire all staff and engender commitment to reaching goals and to raising the maximum dollars for Dartmouth.
  • Ensures a culture where effective teamwork, collaboration and innovation are expected, recognized and rewarded. Leads by example with regard to appropriate risk-taking, cross-organizational cooperation, and clear standards of conduct.
  • Manages relationships with colleagues in the organization, especially Individual Giving, Gift Planning and Donor Engagement & Stewardship, to ensure comprehensive donor-focused strategies throughout.
  • Manages relationships with colleagues in departments across campus to ensure that staff members and volunteers have the information and resources they require to effectively fulfill their duties.
  • Provides leadership and direction in the management of a sophisticated paid student calling program (Green Corp$) to optimize alumni participation and unrestricted annual giving support from alumni, parents and friends.

Strategic Planning/Program Planning/Class Management:

  • Works in partnership with the Executive Director to establish aggressive annual DCF goals and specific class goals and reunion targets in collaboration with members of the DCF staff and selected senior administrators. Monitors progress against goals and implements strategies and appropriate corrections to ensure success in meeting goals.
  • Participates in long-range strategic planning for the department to develop a comprehensive strategy for the annual solicitation of alumni/ae with an emphasis on building annual fund leadership gifts and carrying out the vision, goals and fundraising aspirations of the College’s leadership.
  • Ensures that primary staff and DCF field staff work together to set appropriate strategies and “asks” through coordination of comprehensive prospect review sessions.
  • Brings a creative, critical and analytical approach to planning sessions and looks for ways to be innovative to maximize annual giving dollars, alumni participation and strengthen the base of support through the annual fund.
  • Recommends innovative fundraising initiatives and programs to improve effectiveness of DCF fundraising, going beyond the limits of “traditional” class-based fundraising efforts and looking at new opportunities and strategies for annual fund support, such as opportunities for developing strategies for affinity-based fundraising and engagement strategy that will increase alumni participation.
  • Coordinates cross-departmental efforts to maximize efficiencies and reinforces a collaborative comprehensive approach to donor-focused philanthropy that encourages flexibility and responsiveness, and increases the College’s external support.
  • Remains current with evolving trends in philanthropy.

Program Planning/Class Management:

  • Develops effective volunteer-staff partnerships that rely on productive recruitment, meetings, conference calls, best practice development, training, and ongoing communication with and stewardship of reunion volunteer cadre.
  • Provides staff support to any special reunion-focused DCF Committee task forces or subcommittees in concert with executive director.
  • Manages a portfolio of individuals and classes to include high-demand reunion and non-reunion classes.
  • Manages top College Fund volunteers who are skilled in the art of cultivation, solicitation and stewardship. Keeps current with evolving trends in philanthropy.
  • Serves as a liaison and provides resources and support to volunteers, including Class Officers Weekend, to ensure a high quality volunteer experience by responding to volunteer inquiries in a positive, timely and accurate manner.
  • Oversees the program for educating young alumni and undergraduates on the important role philanthropy plays in the fiscal health of the College.
  • Remains current on trends in philanthropy and strategies and services offered by other institutions in annual fund programs to increase giving and participation efforts.

Solicitation and Stewardship Responsibilities:

  • Manages assigned classes and a portfolio of prospects capable of making annual gifts of six and seven-figures in support of the annual fund, developing prospect strategy, soliciting gifts, and stewardship donors.
  • Works both alone and with volunteers or senior officers of the College to cultivate and solicit prospects. Develops approaches and activities that lead to solicitation and gift commitments, and that will offer appropriate stewardship to prospects that have made such commitments to the College.
  • Serves as an ambassador for Dartmouth through strong representation of the College to both internal and external diverse constituencies; seeks status of trusted advisor, collaborative colleague and effective mentor.
  • Develops short and long-term plans for soliciting individual major donors. Devises an overall strategy for stewardship of donors.
  • Explores opportunities for interaction and engagement with specific major donors, including the opportunities to advance donors’ interest in the College and to demonstrate the College’s interest in the donor(s).
  • Travels to visit prospects as necessary, and often in tandem with senior officers of the College; coordinates appropriate campus visits from prospects.
