Position Purpose

The Electrical Shop is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of all of the College’s electrical power distribution systems. The Master Electrician applies a high level of skill to install, repair and maintain high voltage
electrical distribution systems. He/She generally works as a member of a two person team assigned to special projects and routine work involving high-voltage systems and is responsible for performing those tasks involving the greatest degree of complexity and the highest level of skill. Assists
in all other aspects of the electrical shop workload as required.

Skills & Knowledge
  • Comprehensive working knowledge and a high level of skill in all aspects of the electrical trade, including experience in and knowledge of the College’s high voltage electrical distribution systems and related methods of splicing, testing and terminating, and all controls and relays protecting the systems.
  • Knowledgeable in and able to apply all relevant national and local electrical codes and safety regulations.
  • Ability to work at heights and to perform tasks requiring manual dexterity under physically difficult and/or strenuous conditions.
  • Ability to give and to follow assignments orally and in writing and to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to work independently under minimal supervision, exercising sound judgment and applying good problem-solving skills.
  • Willingness to work overtime when required.
  • Strong commitment to a diverse working environment and to serving the needs of a large and diverse community.
  • Successful completion of the following training prior to performing work to which the training relates:
    - Driver Safety
    - Electrical Safety Related Work Practices
    - Lock-out/Tag-out
    - Respirator Training, Fit and Physical Examination
    - Working in confined spaces
Minimum Experience
  • Strong customer service orientation.
Minimum Education
  • High school graduate with a four year apprenticeship in the electrical trade and six years of relevant experience; or the equivalent.
  • Must be licensed as an NH High/Medium Voltage or Master Electrician and have own hand tools.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and be qualified under the terms of the Dartmouth College Driver Safety and Motor Vehicle Policy.

Typical Examples of Work to be Performed

  • Determines work methods to accomplish assignments.
  • Plans working details and follows sketches, wiring diagrams, or blueprints.
  • Plans and lays out the needed routing, placement and arrangements of a system’s circuits, controls and equipment.
  • Installs, maintains, and repairs all high voltage cable systems, including a semi-annual inspection of all electrical volts housed in each building owned by the College.
  • Checks “dig safe,” i.e. traces underground wiring to prevent unsafe digging.
  • Installs power supply wiring and conduit for newly installed machines and equipment.
  • Connects power supply wires to machines and equipment; connects cables and wires between machines and equipment.
  • Diagnoses malfunctioning apparatus, using test equipment, and replaces damaged or broken wires and cables.
  • Replaces faulty electrical components of machines such as relays, switches and motors and positions sensing devices.
  • Maintains and cleans all vault rooms.
  • Maintains and cleans all man holes which house electrical systems; pumps flooded man holes as necessary.
  • Inspects, maintains, cleans, repairs, tests, and adjusts a variety of equipment, circuitry, and fixtures, VFDs, relays and switchgear, lighting fixtures, fans, switches, office and heating appliances, rheostats, and electric drills, grinders, and shop equipment.
  • Tests circuits and equipment by use of voltmeter, ammeter, watt meter, and ohmmeter, megger and BMI instrument.
  • Measures, cuts, threads, bends, assembles, and installs conduit. Inserts, splices, and connects wires to fixtures, outlets, switches, receptacles, and power source.

Working Conditions

  • Works from ladders, scaffolds, and platforms.
  • Work requires bending, kneeling, standing, climbing and working in stretched, cramped or awkward positions.
  • Work involves regular lifting, carrying, holding objects weighing from up to 120 pounds.
  • Work is performed: indoors; outdoors,in bad weather; in areas that are dirty, or smoky and where fumes are present, in underground manholes.
  • Is exposed to cuts and bruises and more serious injuries working on ladders, scaffolds, etc.
  • Work involves wearing special or protective clothing such as aprons or overalls ; gloves; goggles; and ear plugs.
