Position Purpose

Provides continuing maintenance and care to campus lawns, athletic fields as well as Real Estate and Commercial Properties.

Skills & Knowledge
  • Knowledge of Turf, the diseases, fungi and insect pests with which it can be afflicted, and the treatment thereof.
  • Knowledge of how to establish and care for turf grass as well as mowing and fertilization practices.
  • Knowledgeable in the safe handling of pesticides.
  • Must be skilled in the use and maintenance of tools and equipment related to turf maintenance work.
  • Willingness to work overtime when required.
  • Strong commitment to a diverse working environment and to serving the needs of a large and diverse community.
Minimum Experience
  • One to two years of relevant experience.
Minimum Education
  • High school graduate or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Associate’s degree in Turf management .or requisite certification.
  • State license to apply pesticides required at the operational level.
  • Must be able to pass a DOT Physical; must be qualified under the terms of the Dartmouth College Driver Safety and Motor Vehicle Policy.

Key Accountabilities

Key Accountabilities

Turf Maintenance

  • On a continuing basis, surveys College turf areas for evidence of disease, insect pests, fungus, as well as other problems that may effect the growth of good quality turf grass.
  • Reports observations and conditions to the Grounds supervisor and Turf Manager for discussion of treatment options.
  • Treats diseased areas. Physically removes pests or treats for pest removal including use of pesticides.
  • Collects samples of areas with unknown diseases, pests, etc. and sends for analysis; selects and applies appropriate treatment upon receipt of reports and discussion with the Turf Manager and Grounds Supervisor.
  • Assists with the turf renovation work as required. Works with Turf Manager and if necessary contractors.

Lawn Care

  • Performs all tasks related to maintain College lawns. Helps examine areas to be maintained; identifies areas most in need.
  • Helps plan for specific work to be accomplished to include but not limited to Aeration, fertilization, overseeding, establishment and treatments for disease prevention and pest treatment.
  • Helps execute activities related to the foregoing, including set-up of supporting mechanical and hydraulic systems and all other related tractors and attachments.
  • Operates irrigation systems including maintenance of heads, annual start up, and annual shutdown of the systems.

Fertilization

  • Assists with fertilization program. Helps designate areas requiring fertilization. Accomplishes necessary area measurements; determines fertilizer to be used; calculates amount of fertilizer needed for each area.
  • Applies fertilizer in granular or liquid form; sets up pumps, hoses, flow controls, etc. when using liquid forms or when Hydro seeding.
  • Aerates lawns when needed.

Miscellaneous

  • Works with tractors and attachments as required. Exercises safe working practices.
  • Removes snow and ice from sidewalks, patios, athletic surfaces etc.
