Position Purpose

To aid in bird population and community studies at Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest.

Skills & Knowledge
  • Ability to work independently and apply critical thinking and sound judgment.
  • Good organizational and time management skills.
  • Knowledge of computers and software applications.
  • Knowledge of standard computer software packages for data analysis and presentation, and on-line literature search engines.
  • Knowledge of Northeastern bird identification and calls.
  • Strong commitment to a diverse working environment and to serving the needs of a large and diverse community.
Minimum Experience
  • 6 months of laboratory/research experience.
Minimum Education
  • Working towards a Bachelor’s degree with a major in one of the Biological Sciences or the equivalent.

Key Accountabilities

Key Accountabilities

Fieldwork

  • Records bird abundances using daily transect counts (visual and auditory) across a 10-ha bird study plot at HBEF.
  • Produces timed censuses, territory maps, and nest location for all species of interest.
  • Places and collects necessary equipment.
  • Identifies and troubleshoot any problems.
  • Reports results to the principle investigator and other senior personnel.

Records

  • Collects and analyzes data resulting from experimentation/testing.
  • Summarizes results and prepares progress reports for oral presentation at laboratory meetings.
  • Prepares appropriate and understandable representations of data such as graphs, charts, tables, statistical summaries, etc.
  • Conducts literature searches to assist in establishing new laboratory techniques.

Miscellaneous

  • Communicates respectfully with a diverse community.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Crew Leader

  • Responsible for all former tasks, plus conducts organization and management of other crew members.
