Approximately 5 hours/week during Dartmouth's summer term. Position Purpose

To oversee and manage the day to day operation of the waterfront including: scheduling lifeguard shifts and subs, lifeguard training, and overseeing program safety.

Skills & Knowledge

• Thorough familiarity with docks, equipment, safety, emergency training, and lifeguard training.
• Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills and ability to interact with a diverse range of people, including students.
• Reliability.
• Demonstrated cultural competence; proven effectiveness in serving the needs of a diverse student population.

Minimum Experience

• One season as a lifeguard at the docks, or equivalent experience.

Minimum Education

• High school diploma.
• Certifications in American Red Cross Life Guard Training and CPR.
• Preferably certified as Waterfront Safety Instructor.

Key Accountabilities

Key Accountabilities

• Oversee Lifeguards – including scheduling work shifts, days off and rescheduling for absences.
• Ensure payroll forms are filled out on time, and confirm hours worked by initialing payroll forms before sending forms to the Assistant Director of Outdoor Programs.
• Keep daily records – temperature, weather, number of users, drills performed, incidents (including dangerous handling of motor craft, bridge jumping, etc.)
• Ensure lifeguard equipment is available — including whistle, chairs, first-aid, throw bag, rescue tube.
• Check swim area daily, to ensure:
-Buoys and lines are reset
-Docks are well anchored and clear of debris
-Area is closed properly, gate up and closed sign prominently displayed
-Signage is checked
• Schedule and encourage periodic training drills (weekly). Prepare written report of drill for Assistant Director of Outdoor Programs. Examples of training could include review of CPR; boat over boat rescue; non-swimming rescue-boats, extensions; floating devices, wading.
• In conjunction with Assistant Director of Outdoor Programs, compile lists of rainy day projects for lifeguards and supervise those projects.
