8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, with some flexibility for lab experiment schedules. Work time will not exceed 40 hours per week. This position is funded by a grant. Continuation is based upon available funds. Employment in this position is contingent upon consent to and successful completion of a pre-employment background check, which may include a criminal background check, reference checks, verification of work history, and verification of any required academic credentials, licenses, and/or certifications, with results acceptable to Dartmouth College. A criminal conviction will not automatically disqualify an applicant from employment. Background check information will be used in a confidential, non-discriminatory manner consistent with state and federal law.

Note: This is a grant-funded position.

Position Purpose

To participate as a team member in research investigations in the area of prion biology to develop cell culture, animal, and biochemical models of neurodegeneration. To set up and execute a variety of experiments by applying established methods, procedures and techniques.

Skills & Knowledge
  • Understanding of Molecular and Cellular Biology
  • Ability to learn and perform scientific techniques carefully and precisely
  • Organizational and time management skills
  • Willingness to work with animals
  • Willingness to work with P2 biohazardous materials, specifically scrapie prions
  • Willingness to learn proper biohazard containment procedures and other experimental techniques from the principal investigator, research assistant, and other members of the laboratory
  • Good mathematical and quantitative skills
  • Commitment to diversity and to serving the needs of a diverse population.
Minimum Experience
  • Some relevant laboratory experience.
Minimum Education
  • Bachelor’s degree with a major in Chemistry, Biology, or Molecular Biology.

Key Accountabilities

Key Accountabilities

Research

  • Executes specified experiments precisely and carefully.
  • Observes experiments and corrects disparate results. Notifies PI of problems associated with experiments and suggests solutions to procedures and techniques to meet research requirements.
  • Keeps accurate and organized records.
  • Performs experiments using appropriate P2 biohazard precautions and adheres to all laboratory safety requirements.

Records

  • Collects and analyzes data resulting from experimentation.
  • Prepares appropriate and understandable representations of data such as graphs, tables and charts, etc.
  • Contributes to the preparation of reports.

Laboratory

  • Participates in the day-to-day care of the principal investigator’s laboratory.
  • Orders laboratory supplies as needed.
  • Instructs others in proper laboratory methods, procedures, and techniques.
