Position Purpose

Laboratory Animal Tech I
To provide specific care to laboratory animals in a safe and sanitary manner in accordance with clearly defined direction and established federal, state, and local regulations, guidelines and policies on the use of laboratory animals in the conduct of biomedical research and to provide support for the research investigations.

Laboratory Animal Tech II
To independently provide care for multiple species of laboratory animals in a safe and sanitary manner in accordance with established federal, state, and local regulations, guidelines and policies on the use of laboratory animals in the conduct of biomedical research and to provide support for the research investigations.

Laboratory Animal Tech III
To independently provide care of multiple species laboratory animals in a safe and sanitary manner in accordance with established federal, state, and local regulations, guidelines and policies on the use of laboratory animals in the conduct of biomedical research. To provide support to research investigations and provide leadership and training to other technical staff.

Skills & Knowledge

Laboratory Animal Tech I

  • Must be in good physical condition and capable of lifting and carrying equipment or feed packages weighing up to 50lbs.
  • Strong ability to work in a fast-paced environment efficiently.
  • Ability to work weekend and holiday schedules.
  • Commitment to diversity and to serving the needs of a diverse community.

Laboratory Animal Tech II

  • Must be in good physical condition and capable of lifting and carrying equipment or feed packages weighing up to 50lbs.
  • Ability to apply procedures for the care and handling of laboratory animals.

  • Ability to work weekend and holiday schedules.

Laboratory Animal Tech III

Minimum Experience

Laboratory Animal Tech I

  • No previous experience required.

Laboratory Animal Tech II

  • One year of relevant animal care or relevant experience.

Laboratory Animal Tech III

  • Two years of relevant animal care experience.
  • Compliance and training experience preferred.
Minimum Education

Laboratory Animal Tech I

  • High School diploma or the equivalent.

Laboratory Animal Tech II

  • High school graduate or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Successful completion of the AALAS Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) certification preferred.

Laboratory Animal Tech III

  • High school graduate or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Successful completion of the of the LAT certification exams by the AALAS.

Key Accountabilities

Laboratory Animal Tech I
Note: This is a developmental position, involving intensive training and increased responsibility as the individual becomes proficient in the work. Upon completion of the training and when management determines full performance has been net, the incumbent may be promoted not-competitively to the next level in the ladder.

Animal Care

  • Handles and cares for a variety of animals on a daily basis.
  • Observes and maintains an awareness of the physical needs of the animals and of their condition.
  • Reports changes in animal condition to the veterinary staff.
  • Communicates with the principal investigators and their technical staff concerning the status of their research animals.
  • May administer medications under the direction of a CCMR veterinarian.
  • Euthanizes animals as needed.
  • Achieves competence in caring for and handling the variety of animal species housed in the Animal Resource Center.

Facility/Habitat Maintenance

  • Cleans cages, utilizing washers other mechanical equipment.
  • Prepares and maintains caging and equipment for animal care.
  • Maintains the sanitary condition of the animals and their environment.
  • Prepares chemicals as needed including mixing appropriate dilutions for different situations.
  • Decontaminates areas as needed.
  • Performs light maintenance of the facilities such as replacement of bulbs, preventative maintenance of washers; emptying waste baskets and floor cleaning.
  • Performs regular filter changes to keep the bedding disposal station working properly.
  • Maintains equipment maintenance logs.
  • Washes scrubs and other laundry.
  • Follows the appropriate traffic pattern to minimize transmission of microorganisms of concern in the facilities.
  • Follows appropriate procedures to dispose of animal carcasses on an as needed basis. This includes performing procedures to save identified carcasses.
  • Monitors and stocks various supplies within the facilities.
  • Follows all SOP’s related to all areas of responsibility.

Environmental Control

  • Observes and records the condition of an animal’s environment, including temperature, air exchange, and light cycle.
  • Applies an understanding of the problem(s) created in an animal population by lack of any or all of the environmental factors.
  • Wears appropriate Personal Protective Equipment to reduce noise exposure, or exposure to allergens as necessary.

Administrative

  • Maintains proper medical records and inventory records on individual animals.
  • Maintains necessary documentation such as, payroll time sheets, departmental time logs, animal husbandry logs, clinical incident forms, and room supply inventory need sheets.
  • Monitors inventories of consumable supplies ensuring appropriate rotation and inventory of non-consumable equipment.

Teamwork and Collaboration

  • Demonstrates behaviors consistent with the agreed upon team expectations of CCMR leadership and staff.
  • Demonstrates ability to work effectively with all members of a diverse community. Fosters inclusiveness and diversity.
  • Participates in in-house training programs.

Laboratory Animal Tech II

Animal Care

  • Handles and cares for a variety of animals on a daily basis.
  • Observes and maintains an awareness of the physical needs of the animals and of their condition.

  • Performs routine procedures such as nail clipping, teeth clipping. Blood collection, etc. on all common laboratory animals without injuring the animals or endangering themselves or other.

  • May administer medications under the direction of an ARC veterinarian.
  • Maintains rodent breeding colonies including setting up breeding pairs, weaning, and record keeping.

  • Maintains proper medical records and inventory records on individual animals.
  • Maintains necessary documentation such as, payroll time sheets, departmental time logs, animal husbandry logs, clinical incident forms, and room supply inventory need sheets.
  • Monitors inventories of consumable supplies ensuring appropriate rotation and inventory of non-consumable equipment.

Laboratory Animal Tech III

Animal Care
Handles and cares for a variety of animals on a daily basis.
Observes and maintains an awareness of the physical needs of the animals and of their condition.
Assesses and Reports changes in animal condition to the veterinary staff.
Collaborates with Technologist/Veterinarian in designing a treatment plan, implements plan, and evaluates its effectiveness.
Communicates with the principal investigators and their technical staff concerning the status of their research animals.
Administers medications under the direction of a CCMR veterinarian.
Euthanizes animals as needed.
Performs routine procedures such as nail clipping, teeth clipping, blood collections, etc. on all common laboratory animals without injuring the animals or endangering themselves or others.

Training and Mentoring

  • Demonstrates ability to work effectively with all members of a diverse community and fosters inclusiveness and diversity.
  • Participates in training, conducts in-house training programs for staff and serves as a training mentor for new employees.
  • Serves as a team leader at a facility and/or on weekends.
  • May perform specific duties of the Technologist as needed.
