Position Purpose

Provides leadership and support for the development of innovative and effective teaching and learning practices using sound pedagogy and appropriate learning technology. Provides instructional design expertise to faculty.

Skills & Knowledge
  • Genuine and enthusiastic interest in helping faculty and students with a wide range of skills and interests.
  • Ability to convey complex technical information to nontechnical users and experience in making presentations to professional peers.
  • Knowledge of the creation, use, and deployment of digital media.
  • Ability to solve problems quickly and completely with minimal supervision, to work on multiple projects,
    and to work constructively in a team environment.
  • Superior interpersonal, writing, and communications skills and ability to interact positively with upper management.
  • Skills with web technologies, such as HTML, XHTML,
    and CSS, highly desirable.
  • Commitment to diversity and to serving the needs of a diverse population.
Minimum Experience
  • Four years of experience in higher education supporting learning technology, multimedia projects, a course management application, or equivalent.
  • Specific experience with a course management system highly desirable.
  • Extensive and successful record of working with faculty and students in higher education on academic computing projects.
  • Two years of experience designing and delivering workshops on curricular technology and practices.
  • Experience in teaching academic courses in higher education desirable.
Minimum Education
  • Bachelor’s degree with course work in instructional technology or instructional design.
  • Graduate degree in a relevant discipline (instructional design, educational technology, education) highly desirable.

Key Accountabilities

Key Accountabilities

Learning Practices Development

  • Provides learning specialist expertise to partner with faculty and learning teams to use effective course design and technology to improve the learning experience.
  • Coordinates and facilitates workshops, events, and other opportunities that help faculty integrate the use of available and appropriate methods and technologies to enhance the teaching and learning experience.
  • Keeps track of new and emerging technologies and curricular practices; tests the technologies and applications; analyzes the feasibility of their adoption at The Dartmouth Institute.
  • Works with faculty on course design and course development.
  • Keeps abreast of the current literature on learning theory and learning practices in higher education.
  • Develops expertise in and conducts assessments of curricular projects, technologies, and practices.

Course Management System Support

  • Works extensively with faculty who use Dartmouth’s course management system (LMS). Teaches and assists faculty and staff in the use of the system, both in classes and individually. Provides outreach to users and potential users of the system.
  • Participates in end user support for the LMS. On a rotating basis, provides support outside of regular working hours.

Project Leadership

  • Works directly with faculty and partners by researching and assisting to implement emerging technologies and pedagogical practices (e.g. writing learning objectives, choosing and designing appropriate assessments,¬†organizing and optimizing course content).
  • Working independently, leads educational technology projects that require coordinating staff and resources across TDI.
  • Plans and manages projects for the introduction of new learning technologies to TDI.
  • Functions as project manager, as needed, to ensure that courses are developed according to program deadlines and meet program quality standards.
  • Works as a collaborative team member to help course teams achieve successful project outcomes and reinforce the learning objectives of each respective project.

Communication and Engagement

  • Serves as a member of discipline-focused, cross-institutional teams that provide integrated services to faculty.
  • Acts as liaison to key campus groups and constituents.
  • Participates in formal and informal communications planning and efforts.
  • Develops understanding of similarities and differences in diverse cultures though employee education programs.
  • Communicates respectfully to a diverse community.
