Position Purpose

As a member of a teaching team, assists the Head Teacher and Teacher in meeting the care, developmental and educational needs for a designated age group of children within the College Child Care Center. Works with all staff to create a warm, caring, and safe environment for the care of young children. Participates in planning and implementing the curriculum, guiding children’s behavior, communicating with parents, recording children’s developmental progress, and supervising part-time staff.

Minimum Experience
  • One year of relevant experience.
Minimum Education
  • High school graduate with college level courses in Early Childhood Education.
  • 9 college credits in Early Childhood Education, including 3 college credits in Child Growth and Development.
  • Associate’s degree in Childhood Education preferred.
  • Eligible for NH certification as a Child Care Provider

Key Accountabilities

Key Accountabilities

Education Planning

  • Participates in scheduled and ad hoc planning and evaluation activities.
  • Reacts to and offers suggestions regarding proposals for educational themes, development activities, subject matter for classes, trips, materials/equipment/supplies to be procured/used etc.
  • Originates proposals/ideas for consideration by other staff.
  • Anticipates and comments on children’s likely response to proposed activities and staff reactions required.
  • Observes and reports/recommends on what activities are going well, which are not, and what adjustments should be considered.

Activity Management

  • Assembles needed materials and equipment and sets up activities in accordance with approve plans and schedules.
  • Demonstrates activities. Interacts with and helps children during activities; recognizes when they wish to pursue an interest and assists them in doing so.
  • Provides guidance and re-direction when required; emphasizes positive reinforcement; illustrates proper behavior/skills.
  • Supports activities in a manner that will facilitate children’s enjoyment of activities and learning of behavior and developmental skills.
  • Modifies planned activities when circumstances dictate.
  • Assumes leadership for a specific activity when more than one activity is going on concurrently.
  • Accompanies and supervises children on field trips.
  • Insures safety and well being of children at all times; anticipates, guards against and cautions regarding unsafe practices; supervises/provides protection to activities on playground or other equipment.

Health Policy

  • Implements the Center’s health policies.
  • Promotes good health practices including hand washing.
  • Administers and documents first aid.
  • Dispenses medication according to center policy.
  • Maintains certification in infant and child First Aid and CPR.

Child Interaction

  • Welcomes children upon arrival to the Center.
  • Makes children feel safe and secure throughout the day.
  • Responds to observed needs for attention, reassurance, etc.
  • Consoles children who are upset.
  • Participates in conversations with children; joins in their play; reads to children one-on-one or in groups.
  • Facilitates involvement of children in Center activities; insures children get “fair turns”.
  • Accomplishes clothes changes when needed.

Nutrition/Hygiene

  • Promotes nutrition and good hygiene.
  • Eats lunch and snacks with children.
  • Serves turn in preparing nutritious snacks in accordance with approved menu.
  • As appropriate, supplements menus with items that compliment subject matter being addressed in class.
  • Purchases needed supplies.
  • Contributes suggestions to the menu.
  • Prepares and serves snacks.
  • Encourages eating nutritious items.
  • Insures children get enough to eat.
  • Supplements lunches that don’t meet nutritional guidelines; notifies parents accordingly.

Parent Interaction

  • Reports on how day has gone to parents when picking-up children; relays information of interest from other staff; informs of up-coming activities.
  • Provides input to team regarding developmental progress/concerns related to individual children in preparation for parent conferences; participates in parent conferences, when requested.
  • Verifies that individuals other than parents are authorized to pick-up children.
  • Insures that children are signed in and out by their escorts.

Administration

  • Participates in the maintenance and upkeep of equipment, supplies and materials.
  • Maintains a clean and sanitary environment in the classroom and the center.
  • Sweeps floor; cleans refrigerator; cleans tables and counters. Cleans fish tanks, animal cages, etc. Keeps kitchen clean and orderly.
  • Maintains or provides input to teacher in maintaining record of each child’s progress.
  • Documents accidents, applications of medications, and relevant concerns for child’s well being.
  • Acts for the teacher in his/her absence.
  • Provides classroom supervision; supervises work study, substitute , or volunteer staff.
  • Closes out classroom at end of the day or open up classroom at the beginning of the day.
  • Picks-up and cleans areas for which responsible.
  • Participates in professional development activities.
  • Works with other staff on resolution of Center-wide issues.
  • Assists in other classrooms when needed.
