Position Purpose

Provides high-quality writing and editorial expertise for a wide range of marketing communications initiatives that support strategic Advancement goals, with particular focus on the Dartmouth College Fund. Collaborates extensively with colleagues in Advancement Communications to ensure consistent, compelling, data-driven marketing, advertising, and stewardship campaigns for Advancement clients.

Skills & Knowledge
  • Outstanding copywriting skills for print and digital media, including both short- and long-form content.
  • Deep understanding of direct marketing principles and practices.
  • Must possess full command of the language and of appropriate prose style.
  • Excellent editing, interviewing, and oral presentation skills.
  • Ability to determine and create style sheets.
  • Strong eye for catching design, typography, layout flaws.
  • Ability to organize, set priorities, and manage several projects at once with a minimum of supervision.
  • Creative initiative, team oriented, and customer service focused.
  • Ability to keep information confidential.
  • Proficiency in the Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Strong commitment to a diverse working environment and to serving the needs of a large and diverse community
Minimum Experience
  • 5 years of professional copywriting experience in an advertising/marketing environment or an online equivalent.
  • Marketing/advertising agency experience preferred.
  • Experience producing marketing copy for higher education institutions preferred.
  • Experience translating marketing research data into actionable marketing opportunities
Minimum Education
  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in English, communications, journalism, marketing, or related field or the equivalent.

Key Accountabilities

Key Accountabilities

Writing

  • In consultation with communications colleagues and officers of the college, writes and edits text for a diverse range of projects, in printed and electronic media, with a strong focus on marketing and communications materials for the annual fund.
  • Helps drive the creation of original concepts that result in effective and compelling communications materials.
  • Helps translate research data into actionable marketing opportunities.
  • Works closely on specified projects with communications team leadership to ensure the best possible editorial content and design and that marketing goals are met.
  • Serves as an essential member of the communications team to shape the range of communications efforts, from concept to completion.

Copy Editing

  • Drawing on experience and judgment, edits publications for appropriateness of language and tone considering 1) intended use of the publication; 2) audience; and 3) sensitivity to issues of concern to development and the college.
  • In collaboration with colleagues, determines the style for projects.
  • Coordinates the end-stage of the publication process, ensuring that final edit-art interactions produce polished and accurate work.

Planning and Management

  • Works closely with frontline fund-raisers to ensure communications materials meet their needs.
  • Brings a creative, critical, and analytical approach to planning sessions.
  • Works collaboratively with other communications team members to create best possible materials.
  • Seeks and maintains productive working relationships, when appropriate, with key faculty members, college administrators, donors, and communications colleagues across campus to develop sources for stories that can build support for specific fund-raising priorities.
