This position is funded by a grant. Continuation is based upon available funds. This position is a 12-month-3 years term position. Position Purpose

Postdoctoral fellows are being sought to assist with new federally-funded projects in the Griswold Biomolecular Engineering laboratory at the Thayer School of Engineering, Dartmouth. The individuals will participate in development of genetically engineered protein therapeutics, with opportunities to pursue both next generation antibacterial compounds and high performance biomolecular tracers. The successful candidate will become part of a dynamic research team exploring the frontiers of biotherapeutic design and engineering. As a part of employment, the candidate will acquire skills that will be invaluable in future pursuit of either academic or industrial positions.

Skills & Knowledge

Required:

  • Enthusiasm for research, a high level of self-motivation, and outstanding organizational skills including upkeep of laboratory notebooks.
  • Competence with PCR, molecular cloning, recombinant protein expression & purification, and methods for biochemical/biophysical analysis of proteins.
  • A willingness to learn new techniques and skills, including the operation and maintenance of various instruments.
  • The ability to independently design and conduct experiments, and a willingness to think critically.
  • Prepared to work with hazardous materials such as chemicals and BSL2 microorganisms.
  • Knowledge of computers and software applications for data analysis and presentation.
  • Excellent communication skills and a commitment to maintaining a positive and productive work environment.
Minimum Experience
  • A minimum of four years experience in an academic research environment. Additional academic or industrial experience a plus.
  • Experience with protein engineering and directed evolution a plus.
  • For molecular tracer project, experience with murine cancer models preferred.
Minimum Education

Ph.D. in Bioengineering, Biological Sciences, Chemistry, or other relevant discipline.

Experiments

  • Collaborates with PI to determine overall project direction.
  • Searches literature to develop information and strategy relevant to the project.
  • Independently designs and conducts in vitro laboratory experiments in support of project objectives.
  • Observes experiments/tests while in progress; records observations; trouble shoots as necessary.
  • Collaborates with other staff members to accelerate progress.
  • May assist with in vivo model studies, as appropriate.
  • Adheres to laboratory safety requirements including general and chemical/biological/hazardous waste safety disposal methods.

Records

  • Maintains laboratory notebook recording tasks performed.
  • Collects, analyzes, and interprets experimental data.
  • Generates step-by-step protocol documents for fully optimized procedures.
  • Prepares and presents progress updates for the PI and the biomolecular engineering supergroup.
  • Plays a lead role in preparing scientific manuscripts, technical presentations, and contributes to the preparation of research grants as needed.

Laboratory

  • Assists with day-to-day care and housekeeping of laboratory.
  • Monitors laboratory equipment and instrument performance.
  • Maintains computerized records associated with laboratory activities.
  • Instructs others in laboratory methods, procedures, and techniques as appropriate.
